PSA!!! Don't buy Gates Water Pumps
#41
I suppose the trolls are trying to say I messed up the install of a device held on by 5 M6 bolts. You would obviously be wrong. I've installed at least a dozen water pumps and never had a problem with any OEM Honda pumps. Of the two Gates pumps I've installed, this one pooped out after 40k and the other one (another Pilot) didn't get much use since the transmission pooped out within 5k miles. This Gates pump in my wife's Pilot was a lemon.
PS: You can't really screw up installing this pump, unless the gasket flops out of it's groove and gets stamped between the pump & the block (in which case you would have an immediate leak on startup). M6 bolts torque their heads right off with very little effort. Long before the (im)possibility of distorting/crushing the aluminum pump in any way. Then the 3 motor mount thru bolts get torqued to 33lb/ft with a torque wrench. No way they are doing any water-pump crushing (or whatever).
You guys are grasping at straws here.

Well, I pretty much fell for the convince & price of the all-in-one kit. I trusted the OEM quality of the Gates timing belts (since Honda uses them on 9k rpm piston engines), so I figured they would also provide a good aftermarket water pump too. I was wrong, and almost paid a huge price for it. I made this thread to share my personal experience with others.

How do you know anything? We are probably just living in the Matrix and the coolant leak is just a bunch of pixelized green dots! If anyone is trolling any water pump, then he isn't doing a good job. I haven't seen anyone do a bad review of an Aisin water pump. So go get another Gates Chinese water pump, install it, then and see if it fails. Gates is a great brand, I use their drive belts and auto tensioner, but I wouldn't use their water pump. Some of you are in flat out denial about a clear failure, with pictures here, like Marcus in the suspension forum continuously denying there is a problem with the Ingalls Engineering rear control arms giving problems. Do what you like.

I do not like GATES belts at all... Previous owner put one on the car at some point and they recommended changing it at 61K. WTHeck? OEM belts are (for Subaru 105K or 7-8 years). Needless to say I took the belt off and replaced it with an OEM one.

OEM serpentine belt = Bando. My OEM serpentine belt started squeaking after 40k miles. 105k miles? You are really pushing it.

Looks like the later TL's use Bando:

91 reviewers and only 3 claim failure/leak. Heck, some of them may not even know that some weeping is normal or they could have a myriad of other coolant system issues which led to the failure, not to mention being clueless when installing...

There is to much labor involved to redo this job because of a premature part failure. I want everything to last the full 105K mi interval. Paying more for the highest quality parts on the front end makes sense. No Gates WP for me.

Again, only 3 reports out of 91. I have 100K on my Gates kit/water pump with no issues. I'll be using the same kit when I do my 2nd TB change in 2 months...

I thought Gates was OE quality being an OE supplier. I'm sure a number of those failures are related to poorly installed pumps. If the OE pump has the lips to hold in gasket/o-ring, get that. I know a lot of people on gates pumps going on their 2nd timing belt change, not one issue.

How about the Dayco WP329K1A kit? Mechanic recommended it to me, saying he has installed hundreds of Acura/Honda TBs and has not had a single problem with them.
They cost a little more than the Aisen kit at $194 at Autozone, though I can get much cheaper with coupon codes etc. In comparison Autozone sells cheap Duralast kits for $74, so these Dayco kits are priced higher and Amazon comments say the Dayco are Japanese parts, so it doesn't look like cheap low quality parts. Since the Mechanic is installing it, I think I will go with his recommendation.

Interesting:
DAYCO Warranty Information
12 months/12,000 miles. Timing Belt Component Kits/60,000 miles, or the life of the automotive manufacturer's original recommended replacement interval
My water pump turned out to have a bad shaft seal.

At one point years ago the Dayco kits contain China made tensioners and water pumps. Maybe not now (I suspect GMB). Their warranty doesn't mean much to me unless it will cover labor and consquential damages (which of course, it does not). I will stick with OEM or Aisin.

How do you tell if from China? Will the parts be marked? Review for this kit on Amazon said Japanese parts. An advantage with the Dayco is I can buy from AdvanceAuto or Autozone and return instead of shipping back to Rockauto or Amazon. Also, price ends up being cheaper because I can use coupon codes and shopping portals.
Main thing though, is I would prefer to use what the Mechanic recommended. Both due to his experience as well as if something does go wrong he could blame it on due to the part not being the one he said to get.

2003 Subaru now has 30K on replacement Subaru timing belt and serpentine belts
Both Acura and Subaru state that their belts will go 105K and based upon my experience, I'd say they are right on the money.

Well....You can buy the Gates kit without the waterpump (TCK329), which includes the Koyo rollers for $54. The Aisin BTH-001 tensioner is another $56. Then all you need is the water pump. New Honda/YNA pumps sell between $60 & $90 on ebay, or you can buy the Aisin WPH-801 pump for $64.
This gives you a 100% OEM package which is what most of us seem to be after here, for only $174 (same price as the Aisin kit with a non-oem timing belt).

I see this kit on ebay for only $39.95 for genuine Honda pump. Though it doesn't include gaskets. http://www.ebay.com/itm/like/400803945355?ul_noapp=true&chn=ps&lpid=82 Looks a little scratched up too even though it says New Bulk.
Thinking to go with what you recommended above as OEM except used the Aisen WP. Cost me $186 on Amazon, but I used 15%+ off GCs. So comes out close to what I could have got the Dayco kit for, which would have been $50 off $200 at Advance Auto. Advance Auto has the Aisen kit for $300 in comparison. Best I could find for OEM WP w/gaskets was 117 compared to $70 for Amazon Aisen WP.
Son bought an 07 TL with 91K on it. So it is not past miles, though well past the years.
