Ok I have had a vinyl overlay for 1 1/2 years. The thing about vinyl is:
-If it fades
-If it rips
-If there are swirls
-If they have tears can remove it and replace it with a new overlay.
-If you hate it.. remove it simple as that
With paint
-If it swirls up badly you need a really good buffing or re-paint
-If there are deep scratches you need to re-paint
-If you don't like it YOU SOL
-When you go to sell your car this may be a problem.
Simple waxes and sealers make the overlay look amazing. Here is a thread on my car with it on.

Blue Batmobile on here sells it ... +/- $80 .. I have had one on for over a year. .. no issues. If you wash it the same way your car "should" be washed you get no swirls .. if you don't it looks like the rest of your paint .. so it blends in with the swirls there.

Isn't that the same with anything ... wheels .. paint .. interiors ... I have had mine through a Canadain winter and it gets over 100 F up here in the summer and like anything else .. if cared for there isn't issues.
I guess your assuming the people that do this won't take care of thier cars. WDPSeDaN also stated you can mess up a black painted roof basically from the same reasons.
There is a heck of a lot more to modding a car then never washing it for weeks or waxing it at all and granted a lot are that way, I know, I detail professionally. Those are the same ones that whine and cut down the car for a poor quality finish products.
The key to anything is caring for it. If your not going to care for it don't do either .. don't buy nice wheels .. etc etc etc

Some of us will prolly think some of your mods are a waste of money too...

first time i seen a ssm tl with black roof..good looking out on the pic .
I'm feeling this vinyl.. Have to do more research on it. Whats the process of peeling the paint off? any one know a location in NYC that does it.

one piece vinyl from stickercity...i wax it about once a month...the bluebats vinyl is nice but theres goin to be a join in going down the middle of the roof..so over time it may or may not start to peel from there but i would rather do the one piece...the guys that did mine also tucked the edge of the vinyl under the rubber weather strip so so it would start to lift up on the ends
