Playing around with Plastidip Colors

Playing around with Plastidip Colors
I have a piece of hood trim from an '07-'08 TL-S that was just lying around so I've been using it to test out applying plastidip with. I've seen multiple requests from people in various threads asking what 'x' color would look like. Well, is some thing you check out. I put 4 different colors (White, Gun Metal, Black, and Red) all on the hood trim.
Next I'm going to 4 different areas within each color: Matte (normal), Clear Gloss Finish, Clear Matte Finish, and Gloss Enamel Finish (auto clear coat). So that different finishes can be compared. I'll post up once I get that done. It'll probably be over the weekend at some point.
Steven, the red is looking really good. We may have to play around with it on your car.
1st pic is at night when I got all 4 colors done so it's a little grainy. I'll post up a better one when I can take one during the day (before I add the finish coats). This pic gives a better (but no perfect) look at how the Gun Metal and Red look in person. The Gun Metal is darker yet and the Red is pretty close minus the glare on it.

This pic was this evening after the black and red was done. The red is not that bright in person.

Thought you might like it. I'll try to bring it by tomorrow if I get the chance.
You can get all of them at dipyourcar.com however Ace Hardware carries some colors as well. I got the red, black, white, and clear matte from Ace.
My id on SCII is Buda #168. I haven't played since March though as I've had to put my time toward other responsibilities. I'm planning on getting back into SCII this fall though.

I was wondering what you were up to as my Dad told me you were in buying it and experimenting.
I told him some black and my grille would probably meet at at some point. But, at least I know where to get it with a discount!

Ummm... Ok after I get the different clear coats on there. Only for pictures though! Not going to drive around with a multi-colored grill. ![Tomato](https://acurazine.com/forums/images/smilies/tomato.gif)
This is spray on plastic coating. If you don't like it you can peal it right off. Heck of a lot easier than using normal spray paint. Plus you can put down plastidip first and then paint over it so your paint can the be peeled off as well.
What floor mat? There is a carpet one in the pic... no plastidip there.![Smile](https://acurazine.com/forums/images/smilies/smile.gif)
Yep, I pulled off the grill completely to do mine. I'm to anal about my car and wanted it to turn out really nice.
One of the reasons I'm playing around with different colors is I have something I'm working on. It's top secret.![Ninja](https://acurazine.com/forums/images/smilies/ninja.gif)
Your welcome. The gunmetal would definitely look good on wheels. It would be good on the grill as well if the car is silver. Black car with gunmetal grill not so much.
Have some more pics!
Here is a better pic of the 4 colors.

When I decided to do all 3 pieces of my grill I decided to strip/sand off the custom paint match that I had done to them years ago. There was just to many paint chips and I didn't want it on there anymore anyways. As I removed the paint I realized the shop had removed the satin finish before painting it NBP. Here's what it would look like if you removed the finish off the grill components.

Wing bar and V strip plastidipped and ready to go!

after you commented on having a silver car and gunmetal, I thought for sure that was the route you were gonna go.
black and silver isnt that nice of a combo.
But thanks again for showing me the gunmetal.
my car is silver and i'm waiting for the gunmetal to show up!!

I have the different finishes on the trim piece now. I just have to go through pics to see which ones are good to post. Will have them up soon!

Below are pictures of the hood trim with 3 finishes on each of the 4 colors. This made for some interesting results. I separated each area by leaving the original plastip color in between to easily see sections and provide contrast/comparison. I did 3 coats of each finish.
Each color section had the following done from left to right (plus my impressions):
Plastidip Clear Matte
White: This was hard to take pictures of as the finishes had less of an impact to this color. You can also tell that any lint/dirt on the plastidip when I applied the finish can easily be seen. If you put a finish on white plastidip do it in a clean environment and make sure it's clean first.
![](http://img88.imageshack.us/img88/2679/img2616m.jpg)
Gunmetal: This is where you can see what I'm referring to on the transluscent effect of the clear matte finish.
![](http://img254.imageshack.us/img254/7892/img2617vd.jpg)
Black: I love the gloss enamel finish on this color.
![](http://img534.imageshack.us/img534/296/img2618qd.jpg)
Red: It's red and what I said above applies here too.

Pictures with glare to see difference between the Glossifer and the Enamel Gloss. There is much more glare with the glossifer due to the added light diffusion.

Plastidip Clear Matte
This helps provide a subdued look to the color if that is what is desired. It looks better in direct bright light than it does indoors. It's like taking an anti-glare sheet and putting over it. To me the translucent nature of this finish detracts some from the color finish by making it hazy film type look (more notable in lower lighting) . The clear matte on the white is a slight exception to this as it does a good job of toning down the brightness of the white but indoors its almost as if it gives it a slight yellowish hue (very very slight) but could be due to lighting. When running my finger across the clear matte surface it has the same feel/texture as the normal matte colors.
Plastidip GlossifierThis finish helps to give a slightly deeper look to the color you are putting it on. However the more of this you put on the more of a translucent effect it can have (not nearly as much as the matte). The glossifier also results in greatly increased glare and in bright sunlight can make it hard to see the color if you are looking at direct reflection from the sun. I made sure to take some shots with glare in it so you could see what I'm referring. If you are considering the glossifier, I would recommend considering doing just one light coat to minimize the glare and increased light diffusion. When running my finger over the glossifier surface it grabs a lot more and almost seems to have a slight tack to it. I did try out the glossifier on the hood trim for a week or two a while back and found that the hazy look got worse over time. I didn't like it so changed the trim piece on my car to matte black instead.
Rustoleum Auto EnamelIf you are looking for a nice deeper look to the color and a shinier finish with minimal glare, this finish definitely does the job. Even a single coat looks really good. I really like to depth it gives to the color. I'm considering using this on my matte black grill pieces. My only concern is how the clear coat will hold up to the abuse of driving around. Luckily it's not hard to redo it. The second set of pictures shows how the glare from this finish is more pinpoint and much less diffused than the glossifier. When I run my figure across this finish it glides smoothly but does feel a little grainy but that is due to the plastidip surface underneath. If you want a shinier/deeper look and your application allows for it, I'd definitely consider using a gloss or satin enamel.
Note: I did not have a satin enamel handy to test (but may get one if enough interest). I have not yet tried peeling off the plastidip with the enamel on it. I don't anticipate any problems though as long as there is a proper layer of plastidip underneath it.

Not that this really has to do with plastidip, but I know people on our side were wondering about painting 3M CF vinyl. I showed a couple colors. One actually being metallizer plastdip.
In order: White, Grey, Metallizer, and red.
![](http://i295.photobucket.com/albums/mm154/ssjoeboe9/Snapbucket/1589E120.jpg?t=1329926469)
And while I'm at it, here is a picture of plastidip wheels with metallizer.. as far as I know I'm the only one who has done it. Also sprayed a gloss clear coat over to give it a little more shine.

Buda, amazing thread. Thanks for doing this, will open the door to many other possibilities.
I wonder if you did enough of the gloss clear coats on top, if you could wetsand/polish and make it look smooth. If so, and it resisted rock chips, this would be the route to go for the front grill.

If you payed with PayPal you will get a receipt. But after two purchases, I have found that you will not know when you are receiving your package.I've always gotten it in less than a week though.

i agree, fantastic thread. rockstar, you can actually make the plasti come out amazingly smooth if you have a good hand, you can ask a few of the guys who have met with me at menlo and felt the dip. in about 2 weeks, i'll hopefully be able to post up a full DIY with some of my tips/tricks for dipping, as of now i have had stock wheels, grill, rear emblems, and window trim done. i've also done several other cars, its all about practice, just like regular paint

Jus, I can't tell you how many times I've gotten to the pay part of paypal and then forgotten to click CONFIRM on the following screen. Maybe you never got that far or maybe you clicked pay after waiting a while and assumed it went through and it had timed you out of paypal.

looks like I'll wait a few days to see if any pending transactions took place then order it again.
