PLASTIDIP long term...
Looking for info from all plasti dip users. How has it held up? Anyone done it on their rims? Anyone done a black roof with it on a WDP car? Considering doing it on my rims since it is completely reversible, but I really want to know how it has been holding up. Thanks
yea didnt really plan on using it for my roof but was just curious since some people actually use it to paint their entire car ha. thanks man
You need to apply 5 coats minimum, allowing 10-20 minutes between coats, if you plan on driving on the highway. I've heard that some people with plastidip rims say that its still looking good after a year.
With one can of plasti dip you could redo your grill atleast 20 times haha So "long term" is normally not the question besides people plasti dip because it's a temporary option. Like I want black wheels for now but if I ever change my mind I can peel the plasti dip off
I did a shitty job on my grill. And by shitty I mean only two coats and I rushed to get it done in under an hour. I plan to redo it.

Im going to redo the entire thing proper next week.
Its worn off from road debris in the right upper corner but you cant really see it until you get up close.

Plastidip can last years if done properly (5-6 even coats) especially on body panels like the grill, trim, or emblems.
The only place that Plastidip won't hold up well on is on the wheels. Road debris and normal use will likely tear the Plastidip making you have to redo it. However, a lot of people tend to dip their wheels in the winter to protect from road salt. There are reviews on YouTube that say their Plastidip wheels last forever, but it's inexpensive to redo, so I wouldn't give that much thought.

I did my rims about 4 or 5 months ago and so far so good. The beauty of Plastidip is that you can always touch them up and respray.

Thanks for all the replies guys. Now another question, whats your opinion on black type s rims with a red time attack style on WDP TL? or how about black rims with white time attack stripe around wheel to match car? ive seen red on a black tl-s and it looked really good.
ive seen red on a white 335i coupe and it looked really good too surprisingly.

I got a can of this stuff it says on the can it has many uses. It said it was good for sound deadening too. So I sprayed the inside of my new speaker box, but it is very fumey. Need ventilation. But if you want to use it on a hood or a large area, I would opt for using something similar to the Di-noc paper stuff. I got the cheaper stuff at Pep Boys and it looks just like the more expensive Di-noc stuff. You can get a piece large enough for a TL hood for $50. They sell the flat black stuff too that is not "carbon fiber like".

My lower grille needs to be re-done and I had a piece on my grille where the tape made a nick that has gotten worse from washing car alot.
I used about 5-7 coats or so with about 10-15 minutes between coats.
Will need to be re-done. Otherwise I would recommend some kind of clear coat.

I'm about to find out as my son just did my hood trim on my 07' TLS, he did 5 coats each 30 minutes apart. I had an auto body shop paint the entire grill 2 years ago & now its chipped, the grill itself isn't bad but the hood trim was due to highway rocks. Rather then sand down the hood trim I had him buy a new one for $40. I'd like to do the entire grill but right now will wait to see how the PlastiDip holds up. It seems flexible so shouldn't get chips. Looks nice too.

My old car I brought out to the midwest for the first time, after 2 winters of salt, the coating was pretty much done.
Are people applying it while the wheel is on the car
the roof covers a lot of real estate.
if you go to dipyourcar.com, you can see their process on how they DIP THE WHOLE ENTIRE CAR.
they use a conventional air compressor/spray gun.
Very true. On a large area like that I'd use a sprayer of some sort.
Has anyone dipped their interior panels to change their color (like from tan to black)? I saw the below images on another thread of the center console silver trim dipped, and I have to say it looks pretty good. I was wondering how well this stuff would adhere to our plastic interior panels.
There are better wrapping vinlys and stuff for that part or other interior parts that could make it look richer.

I like the bright version of this. Stands out
Steven Bell did nice job on it as well.

That Plastidip black looks like a pretty good match to the TL's black dash and the radio - even in the texture department. I wonder if the all of the tan panels painted Plastidip black (and the tan carpet, seats, headliner, etc. remain tan) would look too hokey? Too much black perhaps?
I have had great success using Duplicolor Adhesion Promotor and Duplicolor Trim Paint on my front grill and on the front and back trim of the A-Spec pieces. It has held up very well. I'm not sure how it would hold up on interior pieces though???
Forgive me if I am thread jacking by posing questions about using Plastidip on interior pieces.

Any1 find that it takes the paint off your rims. Now hear me out. I plastidipped 2 of my rims black and today i peeled it off. Both rims are completely silver, while my other 2 are the normal type s gunmetlish. Any1 gotten this... Cus its weird
As I was reading this thread, I was JUST thinking about plastidipping the wheels for winter salt.

Take wheels off card put them on a box or old sheet or something for overspray. Buy 3x5 index cards and place between rim and tire to keep tires from getting overspray on them.
I taped off the barrels as I just wanted the faces to get painted. But I did a flashy color so I didn't want to paint the whole rim.
Rims take about 1 can per rim to do it right with 3-5 coats.
If going with a color besides black buy 2 cans of white to do the base coats with. Will help colors stand out more.
