Plasti Dip emblems

I've been thinking about doing some stuff with plasti dip, and after watching some videos on YouTube I went to Home Depot and bought a Can.

As a test I decided to do the emblems, I totally forgot to take before pics, but everyone what they look like. I also forgot to take pics of when I first taped off the area I would be working with, with blue painter's tape. Here's a pic of where I taped after I it was done with it all. Then pull out the news paper and mask off the surrounding areas. The more prep here, the less clean up later. Its ok if you do get some over-spray, it will rub off.

Notice that I framed the emblem, not taped all the way to the edge. The best part of Plasti Dip is that it will cut along the gap of the emblem and the body.
Just like paint you want to start off with a light coats. I did 2 light coats with about 10 mins dry time between coats. Then 2 medium coats.

I ended up having to redo the A and the TL cause I accidentally pulled up some of the Plasti Dip when I was removing the excess.

After about 30-45 mins dry time I pulled the masking off, carefull when you pull the tape the Plasti Dip will pull up with it. Just take your time and be careful. You'll be left with a black frame around the emblems. Sorry again forgot to take a pic. Carefully pull the excess off and it should cut at the edge of the emblem. For inside the A and other spots, I used a toothpick to pull the Plasti Dip up.

I'm happy with the results. Eventually I'll get around to doing the front and rear silver trim pieces too. But first I'm gonna order the Gunmetal Plasti Dip wheel kit from http://www.dipyourcar.com Hope to do the wheels in the upcoming weeks. Depending on how the wheels turn out I might redo the emblems in Gunmetal and the trim in black.

I like it! I have been thinking about doing this for awhile. How long does it take to peel off the excess around the emblems? Did you just use your finger nails where you could? I've never used Plasti Dip before.

It doesn't take long to peel off the excess, just need to be careful around the emblems not to pull up the plasti dip on them. I used my fingers to pull it up and a toothpick to get in the small parts and inside the A.

Definately looks alot better than chrome. Butttt a flat finish is not for me. I recently used Krylon DUAL (primer&paint) gloss black on my emblems. Granted does take more work having to remove all emblems but IMO its more of a oem look. If there's more members interested in plastic dip definately check out this webpage. http://www.dipyourcar.com/shop/page/51?shop_param=

I did this to my WDP TL's emblems, trim and front grill. It turned out great and can withstand the pressure washer. Check out the videos Fonzi's put on dipyourcar.com and you'll see. I too am going to check it out on my OEM rims. That way if I like it and feel good about it, I'll leave it or get them powdercoated. Saves a ton of money for me the family. Nice job DSCHAOS!!

I just did mine last week. did it once on the car, and wasn't happy with the result so i pulled the emblem and sprayed it off the car and reinstalled. this pic was before i pulled it off. i still need to take some of the redo.

Front emblem

Hey dschaos - how did you plasti dip the front emblem without taking the whole bumper/grill apart?
did you just spray it and peel around it (taping up around it)?

Just get some 3M double sided tape from Autozone or somewhere. The "A" has two prongs that kind of snap into the trunk lid but you should put some 3M tape on the emblem too.

If you take off the other emblems, make sure to tape a ruler or something on the trunk so when you go to put them back on, they'll be straight.

It actually can stand high pressure. I have a pressure washer at home and use it all the time on the plasti dip. You just have to make sure you dont stay in one spot too long and are on spray mode rather stream.

Here's a vid:

Resurrection here: I'm going to do this in the next couple of weeks. I also have AM and I'd really like to dip the center bar through the grille and the emblem matte or gloss black (if available), and dip the rest of the grille to match the rest of the car. I looked up plasti dip colors and the "gunmetal grey" seems too generic to match well. Do any of you know/have a picture of gunmetal grey dip on AM? Or if this won't match, is there another color option that will? Just figured I'd ask before I go buy a can to test it.

Tommyg I hear you on that; I was debating on doing everything black too besides for the emblem if I can't find a good color match. I'm going to get my hands on at least some gunmetal grey if not the anthracite color Performix offers, and get to this within the next few weeks. I'm just too busy this week but I will make sure and post results.

Kevin those look great and almost look painted IMO. I like what you did with the center caps; I was planning on doing the same thing once my emblems and grille are done.

I originally painted the center caps too but then it didn't look that good so I easily peeled it off of them.
