Painting your grill - Install w/pics

Sorry if this isnt in the right section, but its a mod and in the mod section.

so here we go.

Painting your grill .

Items Needed:
1. A 3rd Gen Acura TL $ = ???
2. Plastidip Spray BLK $ = < 10 (Amazon, Home Depot)
3. Painters Tape $ = < 2.39 @ Home Depot
4. Time and Patience

Step 1 : TAPE/WRAP
Tape or wrap around all the edges around the grill and have atleast 6 inches of tape or wrap from the grill for excess paint particles.

Size: 80.7 KB

Step 2 : PAINT
Having the can 12-16 inches away from the grill itself. apply a coat of plastidip until a wet and even surface. dont stress if you have uneven paint or a big blob in places, the other coats will even this out. You can have as many coats as you like but i recommend 3-5. Wait approximately 15 minutes before applying another coat,NO LESS.

Name: IMG_20120710_024407.jpg
Views: 337
Size: 75.0 KB

Step 3: Removing Tape
AFTER the end of your final coat, gently take the tape off, (some people say to wait until dry to take tape off but its rubberized which means any stuck to the tape will pull the rest off, so imo, do it while its wet)

Name: IMG_20120710_040103.jpg
Views: 330
Size: 76.5 KB

Step 3: WAIT
wait 4 hours for final coat to dry. do not do anything that has the potential to harm it.

STEP 4 (OPTIONAL) : REMOVAL
If you dont like it and want to remove it or are just tired of it, PLASTIDIP is 100% removable. Just Peel it off and there you go back to normal!

Nice work, but there's a 100% chance you have overspray all over your car now.

ehhh, a lot of members have done exactly as the OP did....besides just rub that shit off if you care that much about it. Granted I did disassemble my entire grill when I did but....but I digress

OP, you need to spray the top part black now too since you sprayed the silver trim black....its gonna look weird with your hood trim silver with the rest black...just my .02

I really like the way that looks. I noticed you painted the lower silver trim piece. Does the plastidip make it look like the grill and the trim are one piece?

^I mod my car for my own pleasure, not for other people to enjoy.

If he likes the grill, that's all that matters.

Nice job, OP. I would ditto masking off a little more and behind the grill itself.

Mine:

subtle, and looks better than the ashy grey that was there before. My friend's RL looks great with it too.

Thanks guys! and who cares if you get a little overspray on your car, its made to be reversible, so just rub it off and/ or wash your car and its gone.

EZ12A : i like how you kept the silver trim on the bottom piece, thinking of taking mine off there.

Do you have to remove the chrome at all for it to hold or does it just stick perfectly fine? For ref: I'm doing this on an '01 CL.

Its amazing how much bigger the opening looks on the silver car after the paint. Like, you fooled the eye enough to think it is a newer TL because the 07 and 08's have bigger grills. And the black car looks awesome.

How hard is it to peel this stuff if you over spray or just don't like it? Would I be picking it out with a toothpick in the crevices ?

I sprayed over the acura logo in the begining. Just use a tooth pick to cut in the fine corners.
The stuff once it dries, peels off like elmer's glue off your skin.

Don't even risk it man, tape up all that you can, better yet, take it off the car, there is a great video on how to take the front bumper off.

I thought about putting a thin layer of vaseline on the chrome ring, then paint everything and then wipe off the vasiline afterwards. The paint or plasti-dip wont stick to anything with vaseline on it. But you won't want to get vaseline on the rest of it so maybe tape might be better..

I think it's easier to get clean lines with tape vs. vaseline, imo

Definately true but that emblem isn't exactly straight lines. Nevertheless tape may still be better. Don't know. Haven't tried it.

Whenever I coat something along these lines, I always do a light sanding on the part to ensure it sticking firmly.
