Nice run with a E 350 this saturday...
On I-80 in PA, no traffic for a couple of miles, ran to 125mph.
Both cars equal from 60 to 125, My 03 TL-S is stock...
"E 350 3.5-litre DOHC V-6
The new-generation 3.5-litre dual-overhead-cam V-6 in the E 350 models is a master of motivation that makes an inspiring 268 hp and a riveting 258 lb-ft of peak torque. "

Sounds right, the E350s are pretty quick for being that big.
For only $1000 more though, you can pick up an E320CDI Bluetec, which is a BEAST!
210 hp, 400 lbft of torque! Not very exciting 0-60, but clearly a highway eater.

Great job staying with him. I once raced with E350 a couple month ago, and the result was the same.

sharp218, i think you got them mixed up!! With all that torque it's great for 0-60, but not so good for the highway.
bigBLACKTL, most likely your car is as fast as a E350, unless you have 6MT.

0-60 in 6.6 is quick, but the E350 does it in 6.3
The 400 lbft of torque allows you INCREDIBLE passing power, see quote below from About.com
2007 Mercedes-Benz E320 BLUETEC Test Drive
By Aaron Gold, About.com
"Floor the E320 from a standstill and you'll be unimpressed -- but stomp on the accelerator to pass a slow-moving truck and you'll be blown away. The E320 accelerates from a standstill like a gas-powered V6, but it passes like a V8."

Yea, that's the case for top-gear acceleration. You get instant passing power with that amount of low-end torque, and the butt-dyno would tell you there's a lot of passing power. However, in reality, when passing on the highway, the E350 would be faster, but it must shift down 2 gears in order to do so. We can also look at the 1/4mile trap speed, where E350 traps at 96mph, while E320 Bluetec traps at 92mph. Dave_B on this forum would quickly tell you that trap speed is an accurate indication of actual power output. Also look at the 0-100mph time, while E320 Bluetec would take 17.9s, the E350 would take about 15-16 seconds. Btw, these numbers can be found in Car&Driver.
In summary, for the E320 Bluetec, it doesn't matter if you are in the wrong gear, you can be in 3rd gear or 5th, when you stomp on the gas, the car would move quickly. For the E350 though, if you are in 5th gear and then go WOT, it won't accelerate very fast (assuming in SS mode). You have to downshift to like 3rd gear to get the power. Afterall, torque, horsepower, and rpm are govern by a formula.

But my case is that on the highway, I would rather leave it in the top gear and floor it to pass cars at a relatively good speed than have my 7-speed gearbox skip 3 gears to pass just a bit faster.

OMGWTFVTEC
I raced a newer C350 coming home from Arizona a few weeks ago. Needless to say, I made quick work of them. Ran all the way to 140+ with no traffic. Though on one of our longer runs, the benz started creeping up when I was hitting about 130. I got a bit too cocky and had put 'er in 5th, thought i could downshift to keep the advantage but the benz-o kept pulling ever so slighty. Once we caught up to traffic, I slowed down and they just kept hauling ass. I guess they were mad that an Acura could give them that much of a challenge in their new Benz...
sorry for the thread jack, just sharin a similar story

You nailed it with the top gear passing point.
Owning a car with more torque than hp, I can say that as long as you have the traction to take advantage, the high torque car's best performance is off the start. When my motor was nearly stock with the boost sky high, torque was 150lbs more than the hp. I was in the 12.0 range at only 112mph.
Back on track, good kill!
