New TL exhaust

I just finished installing exhaust for my TL. I used a magnaflow resonator in place of the factory one, and then just used two small magnaflow mufflers for the rear. I cut the stock tips off the factory mufflers and welded them onto the magnaflows to retain the stock look. the passenger side is a tiny bit off although thats easy to fix. the sound is pretty deep and mellow, no raspy bark at all. i left the middle muffler on, if i need to i can take it off. keep in mind i was not looking to gain any performance on this, that is why i didnt make all new, larger exhaust pipe. i was just looking for a deeper, smooth tone, which i what i got.

Upload them there, then create a post and click that little IMG icon and put in the URL to the picture and it will post it up. Hope that helps.

I got all the parts at cost b/c I did it through my shop...and it was my labor time. I spent a little over 200 on everything.

It is really unfortunate that the woo-woo man with the raiders head band cutting off circulation to his one functioning brain cell did not get t-boned by a gasoline truck when woo-woo ran the stop sign. And they say there is no God.....

Woo Woo man could have saved him self some money and just stuck his head out the window and woo woo whistled. Just maybe then he would had seen that Stop Signal.

Maybe he had of the one pipes go inside the car and the other goes outside the car, this way he can hear what it sounds like outside with having to be outside while he's driving. And we wonder why some eat the young!!!

Hey - if we were to remove one or both of the resonators and the third muffler and went with two borla mufflers and kept the existing tips how do you think that would sound? Extra HP??

Just couriouse............

I am really just waiting on headers and a true dual exhaust with true TL tips!!!!!!!!

Anyone heard off anything yet??????

You will not get a true dual system for the TL. I am not familiar with emission laws outside of California, but as far as I know it is illegal to add or remove catalytic converters from a car, and you cannot possibly run a true dual system from the headpipe back due to the inline cat right before the resonator. You might free up some horse power by removing the resonators, although I doubt it will be much and you will get a really ugly exhaust tone from doing so. The borla mufflers will change the tone, but without the resonators it will be raspy and harsh. Also, I believe that headers are not possible due to the location of the front and rear catalytic converters.

I did not know that I appriciate the info!

I was wondering why comptech has not been working on headers.........or a dual exhaust.........

Thanks again for the info - very helpful!

Has anyone heard of anyone (except comptech) making a new exhaust system? If not I really like what you did - how do you like it now?? Sounds good? Agressive Deep Tone??

I played with my exhaust out for boredom more than anything else. I resisted my temptation to play with it (aside from cold air intake) for almost a half year now. My reason for not doing anything earlier was b/c of the tips...I wanted to retain the stock look. I finally decided I would just cut the tips off, as close to the muffler as possible and then just put a tac weld on each of them to the new magnaflows. That way, if I ever do want to return to stock it will be very simple to have the tips align in the proper place. I was not looking for an aggressive tone, rather just a smooth, deep sound. The exhaust tone coming from my set up is deep, really a lot of bass to the mufflers. Between 2100 and 2900 RPM it has some pretty strong interior noise...otherwise I'm pleased with the way it turned out. I think removig the mid muffler would add more noise to the exhaust, obviously, and thats not something I'm looking for at the moment.

Part numbers: 11365 (rear mufflers) x 2 10425 for the resonator. Im thinking about switching to Stainless Steel, will wait and see about that though.

The stock exhaust has what (two resonators, two catalytic converters, and three muflers) with 2" pipes???

That is just too much......I will eventually get bored like you and do something about this. I already ordered a K&N Typhoon intake and this is probably next.

I would prefer to open this ride up and let it breath. If we combined a modified quality exhaust and a cold air intake - it would really be a better quality setup. I can't stand the typical bzzzzzzzzzzz import fakes around here. We have a quality car and it deserves a quality exhaust.

The stock exhaust on the TL has fairly low restriction for a factory unit. That's one of the areas in which Acura picked up the extra ponies over the former TL Type-S. But I'm sure before too long some decent after-market units will hit the street.. I just wouldn't expect too much of a gain from them.

When I installed my full Mossy catback on my former 2002 Altima SE, they were first dynoed at 20.4 HP and 22.7 lb/ft of torque (those are drive wheel numbers). But the shop that did the dyno didn't trust the numbers so they went back to a previous shop and used a dyno they had been using for other mods and found 12 HP and 10 lb/ft torque. I am here to say when I installed this setup on my Altima, I most definitely could feel the difference. I also had a Frankencar/Apexi WAI which produced a little more power than the Injen CAI unit (13-14 HP for the Frankencar/Apexi). Once I installed the Mossy catback, the car would smoke both front tires all the way through first gear when nailing the throttle at 2000 RPM with the clutch fully engaged! And if I let up then hit it again, the tires would start spinning right away.

Yeah I've read, as I assume all of you have, that the 3G TL has a very high flow exhaust. Obviously 3 cats, a resonator and 3 mufflers do restrict the flow slightly. I dont know how much the exhaust can be improved, the headpipe looks next to impossible to make (at least w/o a mandrel pipe bender) because the one that I have cannot come close to the turn radius needed. Im going to attempt to replicate the system using 2.5" pipe one of these days, just to see how much work is involved. As for performance numbers or improvements...I guess only a dyno will tell.

Yeah, also the Y pipe coming down from the head pipe and feeding the main cat is a trip. Large enough pipe but in a very tight area so mods there will take some work. Also, aren't the exhaust manifolds integrated with the heads? If so, I would think that pretty much precludes the chances of installing any kind of headers.

It was determined a while ago that the 3G TL can't get new headers.

The riginal tailpipe attachment to the new exhaust shows obvious caliber mismatch with only partial welding to the mufflers. This will lead to exhast coming out the sides, rapid rust and finally the tips falling off. The TL comes with good flowing pipes from the factory so aftermarket performance gains will be minimal at best. Just isn't worth the extra money and the hassle of accelerated corrosion.

Yes, I did not fully weld the tailpipes to the outlet tips because I wanted to have an option if I decide to switch to SS mufflers or return to the original mufflers and want to keep the stock tip look. There was no hassle for me to deal with anything, and I already stated that I was not after performance gains but rather a different exhaust tone.
Also, I get mufflers at cost, which was very inexpensive considering there are those who are paying over 1000 dollars to have exhaust systems installed. This swap was done for two reasons 1) an interest to see what kind of exhaust note I would get when switching mufflers, and 2) to see if the installation could be done with relative ease. I did order the inlet/outlet the wrong size for the tips, easy to fix when I get the SS mufflers down the road. The total time I spent on the install (resonator, two mufflers) was just under an hour, which isnt bad considering I had never worked on a new TL before.

hey SUBINF the link does not work for the sounds of the exhuast. I was just wondering what exhaust system would sound good on the 3g TL. I understand you have the MAGANA FLOW setup but what about like GREDDY or something high end like that. Or will this just sound like a rice burner?? I am just looking for a nice deep tone nothing loud, something like the g35 coupe stock exhuast. I would apreciate some feedback. Thanks buddy
