Need help on exhaust issue

OK, I need help from the great group of people here.....

The other day when driving my car, I started to smell something burning.... it worried me greatly as I had the oil changed a week ago.... Well, I looked under the hood and could smell the 'burning', but could not see anything..

Well, after walking to get my mail and coming back to the house I saw a big piece of plastic under the car caught on the exhaust!!! It melted a pretty good amount of plastic on the exhaust pipe just after the catalyst... I have pulled all the loose stuff, but there is now a coating of melted plastic on the pipe!! I have taken a knife and tried to cut it off, but it has about 12 to 14 inches and is not coming off easily.....

What recommendations do you have for me to get it off??

scrape it off, and its going to smell for a long time...ive had this issue, it will burn and burn and burn

scrape as much off as possible

dont inhale, as its toxic...

try to get a scraper from home depot, the kind with a red plastic handle and metal scraper, often used for getting rid of gum...

Try some emory cloth but test it first on an area where you can see how it works.

You might also try coarse steel wool dipped in solvent. Do this ONLY when the exhaust is cold and wear rubber gloves. I hope you are successful.

Steel wool will probably work the best..its going to stay on there for a little while regardless...

Thanks guys....

I have tried to scape and such, but it is pretty stiff. Brother in law suggested a heat gun to soften it up a bit.... but it is raining here in Houston, so have to live with it for awhile.

Carb cleaner seems to melt most types of plastic. Make sure the pipe is cool and avoid the fumes by working in a well vented area. Don't get it on the bottom of the car, as the undercoating and paint may suffer.
