n00b to TL... buying one today! help!

hey guys!

i'm looking at this '04 TL with 80k miles from a respected dealer. car's been thru 115-point dealer inspection and is ready to go...

since this is my first TL, is there something i really need to look out for before pulling the trigger?

is there a link to general things to know/problems/cool facts on this car...?

sorry i don't have much time and need to make a final decision today... i just found this site today so didn't get chance to search...
appreciate any input. thanks!

Make sure all the recals are done on the car. When you test drive it just make sure the car is shifting smooth.

How much are you buying it for 14k?

Acura dealer inspected & price is right.. go for it. Some things to know.. the Camel interior is a dirt magnet. The TL has a shit load of rattles so if you came from a Lexus.. it might be unbearable for you. Minor things here and there, nothing real major and this is the best site to be on and learn more about the TL. Stay away from the performance & mod section.. otherwise you'll be writing checks your ass can't cash.. lol..

Don't pay more than $13k for a '04 TL. JMO.

Well pretty much you paid 13.5 so thats not that bad of a deal. Plus it is a lease return so you know the car was taken care for.

04 Had tranny problems.. that's the only thing I'd be concerned about.. because a blown tranny mean kiss 2g's goodbye to repair/replace.

I'm not gonna be doom and gloom about the car... If it was checked out through acura and was a lease, hopefully it'll be relatively problem free! On a happier note... CONGRATS! Any plans for the car? ASPEC kit, drop, rims, etc?

Congrats on the car man.

I bought my previously leased 04 TL last August and I haven't had a problem with it yet (knock on wood).

thanks for the warm welcome guys! well i finally got the car home today. looks clean and drove smooth a 100 miles back home... i'll post some pics up soon....

now i noticed that while driving on the highway at cruising speed, when i tap on the gas, i hear a slight sound from the engine like a 'zeee' for the time i have the gas pressed. there is also a very slight vibration feel on the gear shift. is this normal? it's not something unbearable, but just wondering if it's a common issue...

I don't know what a 'zeee' is but as far as the vibration from the gear shift that is not normal. My gear shift does not vibrate, ever. Do you have an auto or manual?

If you don't have an aftermarket intake installed.. the Zeee might be torque converter whine. Vibration on gear shift doesn't sound good. Have the transmission mounts & motor mounts inspected. Check the maintenance history and make sure all maintenance was done to schedule and be prepared for the next checkup. If you don't have a maintenance history then you need to do a full checkup and I suggest fluid changes all around - ATF, BF, Coolant, PS.. then seafoam her through the tank and the intake and it would be a good time to do a tune up - NGK Iridiums.

The sound & vibration shouldn't occur and might be indicative of a mechanical problem.

hey btw.. you said it had a 115 pt inspection... from who??

edit: you can go to the acura site below and enter your vin to check for recalls needed..

this is the information i pulled from the link above:

Concerned about safety? So is Acura. That's why My Acura provides up-to-date recall information about your vehicle. Because My Acura recall listings are based on your Acura's Vehicle Identification Number (VIN), they are specific to your vehicle.
Your Acura is included in the 04-05 TL WIPER MOTOR Campaign.
Description 04-05 TL WIPER MOTOR Date 02/26/2008 Type Recall Customer Letter Status Fixed Your Acura is included in the 04-08 TL POWER STEERING HOSE Campaign.
Description 04-08 TL POWER STEERING HOSE Date 02/27/2008 Type Recall Customer Letter Status Fixed
the 115-point inspection was done from the non-acura dealership where i bought the car from. the carfax shows that all the maintenance work was done from an acura dealership since the beginning.

does this list show recalls that i need to get that are not done yet?

like bmw's, can i give the key to the dealership to pull all the maintenance work done on the car till warranty?

I believe dealerships keep there own files on vehicles and is not centralized and the info is not stored on the car / key.

It looks like the PS Hose & Wiper motor were fixed already. The next step is to take it to Acura. Where are you located?

Beware that Acura might say you have a 100 things to do to the car.. Just get all the things that need attention and drive out. Get back to us before going ahead with any work.

If you don't know the maintenance history, call the dealerships around you / where the vehicle is from and try to ascertain that info. You should definitely do a full round of fluid changes but that can be DIY or in the least done fairly cheaply.

Take it in to the dealership and have them look at it right away. Don't let it go too long without them looking at it-so you can hopefully get it fixed under your used car warranty.

Any tint on the TL will look great. I went with 15% all around, but you may want to stay legal. Congrats on your purchase and welcome to AZ

okay, so i have setup an appointment with the acura stealership to do a full inspection again on the car and check for that noise... the inspection is $90 and maybe additional to check for the noise... is it really worth getting the inspection done and is it thorough?

It depends on who is doing the inspection.. talk to your service manager and tell them you'd like to talk to the master tech who will be inspecting the car so you can tell the master tech exactly what your issues are.. Ask the tech what he'll check for.. when you come back.. talk with the tech again.. skip the service advisor mumbo jumbo..

and don't let them tell you that you can't go back there because it's dangerous.. b.s... anyways, they'll ask a invoice authorization for any work beyond the vehicle inspection. Ask for a discount since it's almost the same thing. I think diagnostic cost is like $115..
