MTL Fluid Change Question

Okay, I'm tired of the poor shift action of the Honda MTL and plan to change it out this weekend. I did a search and my question does not appear to have been answered.

In the past, when I changed MTL in my Supra, I drained the fluid, replaced the drain bolt and filled the gearbox through the inspection hole. Is this not possible with the TL? It seems like a hastle to disconnect the battery and airbox just to add tranny fluid. It looks like a 10 minute job if it's possible to fill through the inspection hole.

Tips are greatly appreciated!

Thanks,

Don

Inspection plug...

The inspection plug is a tiny 6mm bolt in a very difficult location to access from above. Trying to fill through that hole would be more work than simply following the instructions.

I did my own change to Red Line MTL and it wasn't difficult at all. Just have your Radio and Navi (if you have it) security codes handy to key in once you've reconnected the battery.

I plan to put the car on a lift. I'll give it a shot. If it works, I'll take some picutes.

I'll put the car on a lift so I'll be attacking it from the bottom. If you disconnect the battery do you lose all your personal settings in the MID? Seems like a lot of extra hastle for zero gain IF you can fill the trans through the inspection hole.

I'll report back on Monday.

Cheers,

Don

Security codes... I missed something. So, what does this tranny fluid do?

you need the codes for when you disconnect the battery

Apparently, but what exactly is the purpose. Is it to prevent someone who steals the navi from being able to use it once its lost power?

It really isn't hard to remove the battery and airbox...possibly adds 15 minutes to the job round trip. Every time I change MTF, I'm cleaning my filter anyway so I'm already halfway there...

After doing it myself, I was surprised b/c I thought it was going to be more of a pain than it actually was- not really any hassle.

...And what's the big deal about entering the codes? Mine are on the side of my glovebox. I didn't even put em in until the next time I drove off...

Okay, I did the change this morning.

First off, the inspection bolt hole was too small to fit a filler in, so don't bother. I took off the battery and air boxes and it was a snap as ITL said.

Next, the GMSFM transformed the shifting. No more synchro crashing on 1-2 shifts. It now shifts perfectly. Kudos to RR for his research/recommendation. I would highly recommend this for anyone with a 6MT model.

Lastly, shame on Honda for putting fish oil in the gearbox in the first place. Instead of selling GM V-6 engines for the Saturn Vue, they should trade GMSFM for the motors.

If your on the fence about the hastle, don't sweat it. The shifting is totally transformed.

Cheers!
