More on 'notching' while shifting into gear

Well, I took my 6MT into Acura today and had them look at the 'nothing' problem that I was having. I told them that vehical didn't shift smoothly into 2nd/3rd/4th... that it felt as if things weren't synchronizing properly. 'Notching' is the best term I've heard yet to describe this feeling.

Well, the tech drove my car and noticed what I was talking about. We then drove a brand new 6MT (still had the white plastic on it), and that car had the exact same problem. Appearantly, it something has been introduced into the currentl line. So, he said there was nothing he could do about it. We filled out a complaint and sent it off the tech line. Now I wait.

I have the same notchy feel when the car has been sitting all night in the garage. After it warms up, it's much smoother. Noticed this same notchy feel in my last 6MT, especially when it had been sitting all night. I am not worried unless a grinding sound starts to accompany the notchy feeling.

If you perform a search, you should find plenty of discussions relative to this topic.

My 6MT has over 1K on it now and the gearbox is shifting better and better each day. Very rarely do I now get the notchiness or hard shifting when I'm gliding through the gears.

Sorry for the thread jack.. but im new here and Im planning on getting a new 6MT TL. I can picture the notchy shifthing that you are talking about but how bad is it? Is it notchy to a point that you can hear the synchro grind? Another question, how is the shifts? are they short enough or they require a short shifter?

finally_TL you need to drive the car for yourself, one man's problem may not be one for another. I don't know what jack's prior experience is with a manual tranny but as I stated in my prior post compared to the 350Z this tranny is quite smooth. I definitely feel the "notchiness" Jack is referring to but on my car it appears normal for a manual tranny.
Test drive test drive test drive until you feel comfortable and pump the salesman and service department on the issue. I did that on the turanzas and I ended up educating them about the problem, now they're on top of the issue.

With my 6MT, I've had no grinding whatsoever. The only notchiness I had was on cold mornings when I was shifting from 1st to 2nd but that has gone away with the warmer weather here in the Midwest. Plus, today it was a bit cold and snowy and I had no problems.

I've driven nothing but manuals all my life and this is, by far, the best manual tranny I have ever owned. The throws are short and crisp - just the way I like it.

I do agree with a test drive as we all have our own expectations.

I had a lot of problems early on with the exact same issue, and my car has over 4k, and it's very smooth now. Don't worry about it.

I just got a call back from the dealership. He spoke with the Acura techs and they said the notchy feeling is due to their 'Double Cone Synchronizers'. It's normal. They also said they get more calls from new cars as opposed to older cars, leading me to believe the problem will go away after a few thousand miles as mentioned above.

I have no idea what 'Double Cone Synchronizers' are. Hopefully someone that does will chime in and let us know if this 'sounds right'.

Synchronizers - how it works

http://auto.howstuffworks.com/transmission6.htm

This should provide clear explanation of synchronizers. I would imagine "double cone" meant multiple layers of the cone to smooth out gear engagement? I think I heard my TL mechanics say that gear 1 and 2 have triple cone synchros, while all the rest have double cone...

I notice the same "notching" when it cold, mainly down shifting in 3rd, 2nd, and 1st. However, as with some others here, after its warmed up there's no prob.

Maybe a different tranny fluid? Not enough getting around.

Mine is definately smoother as it warms up and also as I get more miles on it. I suspect thngs are just a little tight and need to get a little wear on them to loosen up. Maybe a sythetic trans lube would help??
