Mobil 1 - New Downgraded Formula?
I've been using Mobil 1 in my TL and my previous car for a number of years. I just heard that the formula has recently been changed and that they now use a portion of "regular" (non-synthetic) oil in the mix. Does anyone know if this is true? I went to the Mobil 1 web site and it says Mobil 1 is 100% synthetic. I've always trusted Mobil 1 to be a good product. Is it still premium oil? Does anyone know for sure what's happening? Thanks.

It has changed to the non-PAO formula now. It is a Group III which is based off more crude materials/particles. So it is not as good as PAO.
Redline, Amsoil and Royal Purple I believe are the only ones left that are PAO.
Penzoil Platinum is cheaper and has performed just as good as M1 these days.

No, it is also a Group III oil, but its half the cost of M1 and in tests it seems just as good. Take a look at Bobistheoilguy.com on the Gas and Oil forum area. Many recent topics of M1.

ExxonMobil has to 'downgrade' their products?
Aren't they making enough money these days, $10+ BILLION A QUARTER?
WTF ?????????
How 'bout Castrol Syntec?

Just bought it for my next oil change due next week.

There was a post that had two lab tests done on the newest 5w30 and 15w40 or something like that and it was verified it was no longer a SOLID PAO.
It is definitely not a full synthetic anymore.

The group III Mobil1 still finished first or near first in every category in a Sport Rider Magazine oil test a couple of years ago. Autozone is selling a 0W-30 Castrol Syntec Eurospec PAO based oil. PAO's are generally better than group III's, but no telling how the newer Mobil1 would fare vs. this Euro Syntec.

I remember reading that the tests on the Mobile-1 oil were on 15w-50, which is not required to meet the same EPA requirements as other more common grades. I thought I remember reading this had something to do with the "downgraded oil" for this grade or something like that...
As a side note, I still would never use Pennzoil. I will never use any pennzoil products, becuase they own "Slick-50" (or was it DuraLube), which is one of the biggest snake-oil products that is actually bad for your engine. DuPont (owners of Teflon) even explictely say that Teflon is not recommended to be used as an engine oil additive.
I don't trust pennzoil, becuase by them buying this company and selling their products, it has become obvious to me that they care nothing about "protecting your engine" and only care about making $$$. But that's jusy my opinion.

Mobil really went down hill when they merged with Exxon. For a really good true synthetic try the Elf products. http://www.lubricants.elf.com/lub/co...NT00082C6E.htm

Oils are sold on a performance basis, not so much on a composition basis. One should focus on the final performance of the product, and not be so concerned about its exact composition.
If ExxonMobil stuck with PAO base oils and continued to sell for < $6.00/qt, they'd price themselves out of the market. But more importantly, the switch to Group III is most likely an availability driven decision more than anything.

People buy Mobil 1 because of its name and are willing to pay extra for that... But I will simply pay 7bux for a non Mobil 1 oil next time.

M1 is worth $6.00/qt. It's a good oil. But Pennzoil Platinum is only $1.99/qt, so why should I use M1?
<---Uses $0.59/qt Shell 5w-30
