MMT Gasoline/Fuel Additive

On the back of the TL "Quick Start Guide" it states that some gasoline in North America contains a fuel additive called MMT which can deteriorate performance, fuel economy and emissions control system. It states failures caused by fuels containing the MMT additive may not be covered under warranty.

Are ther any gasolines sold in the US that contain the MMT fuel additive which Acura states could cause harm? If so, what are the brands?

Interesting you asked this....I was asking myself the same question and did an internet search on MMT last night. It is a fuel additive used to prevent premature ignition (knocking). Until 1995, it was banned in the US, and it appears to still be banned in a number of states. Auto manufacturers are against it universally, as it appears to foul ignition components. Some have health concerns over it because it results in airborne release of magnesium. It looks like it is used almost exclusively in Canada. I could not find out which retailers use it in the US. Here is the Ethyl Corp link (they make the stuff, so there is some propaganda here): http://www.ethyl.com/nav/default.asp...oducts&page=pa

Here is the most informative article I found on the topic: http://www.canadiandriver.com/articles/jk/020821.htm

Hope this helps!

Sorry if this is old news, but I did some research on MMT recently also after buying a 2002 TL in January. The Canadian owner's manual recommends not using fuels with MMT additive because it can harm the emission control systems. My first thought and what I told my wife was that if it's that bad I'm sure the big gas companies don't use it. Boy was I wrong. It appears that if you are in the US, you are okay, very few gas companies use MMT. Canada is a different story. Apparently, the only gas available in my area (Ontario) without MMT is Sunoco Ultra 94.

And here's a study someone did using Ultra 94.

In western Canada, regular Chevron gasoline is MMT free and I hear Arco also:

In eastern Canada, I think Irving Oil is the only one not using it.

Happy reading!

For my part, I now go out of my way to buy Sunoco Ultra 94, which is only 1.1 cent more per litre than their gold 92 octane or 12 cents more per litre than regular 87 octane.
