Question Might buy a TL Type S 6MT Tomorrow - What to know?

Hey Everyone!

This is my first post. I am looking at an 08' TL Type S, Manual Transmission tomorrow. Asking price is $19,000 and it has 58,000 miles on it. Looks pretty clean and I have been wanting one for some time now. I am curious if I should go with a manual transmission vs. an automatic, and also if that is a fair price for the car. I think it is, but it does seem a bit on the high end. Keep in mind, I am in CA.

Would love to hear some feedback. I know about the transmission issue, and there's been a fluid swap done to correct the problem. Other than that I know nothing.

3rd gear issue being pop out of gear or hard to engage, GM fluid will help smooth out the problem. Other than that check to see the clutch is slipping, dealer price for a clutch replacement is around $2200-$2500. Acura clutch know to be slip around 30k miles if not driven properly. Check to see rough idle since MT car can be over rev and cause a bent valve, but I am not too worry bout it since the mileage is low.

Thank you very much! A good friend of mine owns an repair shop and he will be checking it out for me tomorrow. I will have him look into everything you mentioned. Do you think the price is fair?

It's the age-old question (Auto vs. Manual). Get which is best for you, but let us know what you decide.

Welcome to AcuraZine-best of luck on your impending purchase.

I know he mentioned this was a problem, but he switched the fluid and it corrected it.

Price seems good low miles is a plus as well. Auto vs. Manual is a hard decision. I've been driving manual for years and never thought id drive automatic again but after my purchase of my auto TL, I'm ok with it.

Standard background check for accidents and a once over at a local mechanic is always a good idea, along with your own check for interior / exterior condition, brake life and tire life. Also check to see if all recalls were performed. I think there was one about a hose some time ago, not sure, an Acura dealer can tell you via the VIN number.

Price seems good. I'm also looking for an Acura TL Type S 3rd gen but no one near me is selling it in manual. Might have to travel across states to pick one up.

That's pretty low mileage wise. There are a few members that are well above 200k miles and still on the original clutch. So long as there isn't anything obviously wrong with the car it should be fine.

Personally, I think Honda makes some of the greatest manual transmissions in the world.

They also make some of the poorest automatics in the world. Their automatics are different from other autos because they didn't want to infringe on BorgWarner patents, but their automatic R&D lags behind others. That's why their autos had 5 speeds when everybody was at 6-7, and they got 6 speeds when 7-8 was the norm. Their transmissions also shift slow and lose a lot of power. From 2000 - 2005 or so, they weren't even very reliable.

Recently, even Honda (through Acura) has given up and switched to using ZF transmissions.

i would check the motor mounts, looks like they fail pretty early on these cars. Also check to see if any of the shocks are leaking.

Since no one has spoke on it yet, MT's are faster, i heard even base TL MT's are faster than Type S autos.

Just putting it out there. Prolly make you feel better about getting the MT.
