Yeah I feel a bit raped to be honest, but I don't have time to mess around with it....I'm hoping they don't find a bent valve when they check it out. My CEL was still intermittent, actually was off again when I dropped it off yesterday..

I doubt it's the ecu because I reset it several times -- code puller, battery method and also the gas pedal method. Also the plugs aren't loose the dealer checked them out again yesterday and I originally torqued them at about 15lbs with plug lube.

really hoping it's just a valve adjustment, but I agree with nfnsquared, that seems like BS, when I asked them if they were sure they said "that's the only other thing we could think of.." maybe they'll give me a credit when they find out I need a new head or new ecu...

The point of this thread is probably "don't drive a family car like an a**hole", but I'll be sure to let you guys know what the final verdict is.

Spoke to the service rep and after I asked which ones were out of spec, he stated "they were all pretty much out of whack". I asked him to double check with the tech that worked on it, just for my own reference, and he said, "he probably won't remember, ughh but I'll check, probably around cylinder 4 since that was the misfire."

I'm hoping I'm in the clear on bent stuff, and guess they would've had to do something or the CEL would come back on in ~200 miles. As usual I'll report back either way, maybe a few weeks though.

That's just total BS from a guy who's paid to BS you. He had no clue, guaranteed.

You should have told them you wanted them to record the valve settings when you dropped the car off. Oh well, too late now. And sorry to say, my bet is the MIL will come back on pretty quick... Good luck

Just hit 500 miles and I'm in good shape no CEL/MIL.. I think this could have been due to the loose spark plugs, a few non-synthetic oil changes but more likely bad quality control/torque specs at the factory (first year of the 3.5 Type S), and/or my aggressive driving style.

Overall, I'm satisfied and feel more torque throughout the RPM range, I'd estimate at least 5-10% more power throughout.. just upgraded my bike motor so I feel confident in this estimate. I plan to check for loose plugs at every tire rotation, and will check the valves again at 90k.

Attached is a short audio clip. I still have a light pinging sound towards the passenger side of the engine still, but not nearly as bad as it sounded a few weeks ago with a loose plug.

I used my smartphone, which is good, but doesn't pick up the lower frequencies and makes the higher ones --"pinging"-- sound louder overall. I placed my phone on the passenger side front tire as close to the ping as possible. Towards the end of the clip I revv'd to 4k and you can't really hear the ping anymore. I can't hear it from the interior or driving next to medians anymore either.

This was with a warm 2007 TL Type S with 50k, just after a valve adjustment (which had no real impact to the ping at all), I'm due for an oil change though..

UPDATE:
I'm sorry to say but nfnsqured was right on.

I kept noticing hesitation and a slight misfire under acceleration (dealer didn't think anything was wrong), finally the cel came back on and registered a misfire on cyl 4 and 1. Dealer did a compression test and cyl 4 is weak.

I'm guessing something's bent, and i'll have to pay-up and get it fixed.

I have the same symptom on my 06 TL 240k km...going worse with the spring temperature reaching 15 degrees outside...less perceptible at 0 degrees. I'll check that tonight! I hope that is the problem so I can cancel my appointment at the garage.

Definitely check the plugs, I actually felt vibrations on the coil pack when mine were loose
