Look What I Found In My Cabin Air Filter

I thought it was time to replace my cabin air filter this morning. I have 30K miles and I did the last filter replacement at 15K. As it was service 'B' time, I thought I would get this done. Really simple, ten minutes.

Anyway,

the last time I replaced the filter, it was just dirty. BUT today, I could not believe what was in the filter box, on top of the filter!!

Where the hell did all this come from? Where is the air intake for the cabin filter?
It looks like I took in a ton of leave debris, bugs and what looks like a green softball sized lint ball!!!!

Anyone know where the intake is for the filter? I must be missing a screen or something...

Wait, Is that "cabin air filter" the same air filter it comes out from your Cold Air Intake (stock)?? I swapped that out along time again, don't remember ever changing the air filter on a stock one.....

Or is it something different?

No, no, this is something totally different. The filter you're thinking about is for air intake for the engine. This filter is located underneath the dash on the passenger side, and filters incoming air for the HVAC system.

I thought it was a snake at first.

Are you using your TL as a lawn mower?

I hope somebody will answer your question about the intake. Glad you changed it.

I swear, there was no 'grass' in the filter!!!

Just a lot of green lint as if from a lint cloth and a lot of leaf debris.

I cannot figure it out for the life of me. Last time I changed the filter it was just grey, no debris.

How could this happen?

The giant lint turd is from the flow of air circulating (like a tornado) inside the airbox which created my green snake log from all of the debris...

Still can't figure out how all that junk got in there.

If I am correct, the intake for the cabin is just below the windshield wipers and below there in the engine compartment..

Can anyone confirm if there is a possibility that there could be a leak somewhere? I can't see how all that debris made it through those small holes...

Did you have your A/C system on high while going through an automated car wash (with green brushes)?

No clue how that got in there, but I would make a trip to the dealer with the old filter and have them check it out. That does not seem normal at all.

Air filter "Stuff"

Hi all,

If there is truly lint in the mess, check around your hood liner, etc. I've had this in other cars and it turned out to be due to mice. They were shredding the hood liner insulation and using it to make a nest.

I had mice in the garage. They even carried back the D-Con I put out. I raised the hood one morning and I heard this rattle. I pulled back the hood liner and there was this pile of blue/green pellets.

My best guess if it is fiber.

I was going to say it looks like the work of mice, but somebody already suggested that.

Try looking up inside the vents leading to the filter - and see if there is any hair or little doodoos mixed in with the green stuff - you might be looking at a mouse nest. If the green stuff is sort of soft and fluffy - and didn't come out of the TL then look around where you normally park and see if somebody elses car might be missing some foam from somewhere in the car - or maybe somebody left some clothing, towels, etc. lying around.

Mice will drag things a long way to make a nest - and get into some pretty strange places.
