75% is lighter than 35%. The percentage is how much light the tint allows in. "Limo Tint" is 5 %.

You can have tint as dark as you would like given that the front two windows and windshield are left alone

I thought CA doesn't allow any tint into the front windows and the windshield, except the factory tint-glass. (04TL has 75%)

In the back, CA doesn't limit you.

Anyway, I don't know what's the new regulation for it, but always remember my friend's BMW used to have 5% all around (RF window, rear windows) and he HAD NO TINT IN HIS LEFT-FRONT WINDOW. It looked so funny each time I saw his car. He said he never got tickets... LOL.

This is from CHP page regarding street legal at;

http://www.chp.ca.gov/html/streetlegal.html

Illegal

Tinting the front side windows and the windshield (except for a narrow band at the top of the windshield). Windows behind the driver's head may be tinted. If rear window is tinted, right-side mirror is required (26708 VC).
Also see laws at Llumar site;

I actually got a fixit ticket from the CHP on this last year. The cop told me that you are not allowed to tint the front windows of the car at all including the windshield. You are allowed to do whatever you want with any other windows. He actually wanted me to peel it off right there in front of him. Which of course, I didn't.

Any way, I guess if the cop is a dick and is looking for something to write you up on, then yeah, it's technically illegal. But, if you are being a good citizen and not causing trouble, then you are probably okay. Just be careful...

Tint

Usually the CHP's are the ones that will pull you over for tint alone. The local cops don't really care.

I have been pulled over twice just for tint (5% back, 20% front, 8" tint on top of winshield) by CHP. A local cop gave me a ticket for speeding a few weeks ago but didn't bother to write up the tint.

I have had similar issues with my wife getting a ticket by local cops without being written up for the tint on her car also (20% back, 35% front).

I believe all tint on the front two windows is illegal unless its factory and anything lower than 4 inches on your winsheild is illegal also.

Here is the site for the vehicle code for CA and the tint law:

CHP usually goes through a 2 week period where they target anyone with tint on the front windows. I have had my cars tinted for the past 10 years and have never been pulled over for tint. The back is darker than my front and I don't go for the limo style - light tint in front / medium in the back.
