K&N Air Filter Cleaner Kits?

K&N Air Filter Cleaner Kits?
Hi everyone. I just changed my air filter in my 06 TL with a K&N direct replacement filter that I got from Kragen's. I've always used Fram in my old cars but this my first new car so I thought I'd give the performance air filter a shot. Anyway my question is, while I was at the store, they had this K&N air filter cleaner/recharger kit you can get for about $15 to clean your K&N filter. Does anyone know if those work? Or is there an easier/better way to clean the K&N filter? My engine is completely stock with the exception of the new air filter I just put in. I tried to search this topic but haven't found any on the cleaning of the filter. Any input will be appreciated. Thanks!

The recharger kit contains the oil that should be used to re-oil your filter after cleaning it. I think I shook mine off before, then re-oiled, but don't recall the exact cleaning directions.

Thanks Will. I just put it in so I figured I'd clean it with my oil changes which according to my MID is about every 6000 or so miles. I can always google that later but just wanted to see what the experts here do

I had a K&N filter in my mustang. There are two bottles in the kit. You spray on the cleaner and let it sit a little and then hose off the filter from the backside. You then reoil the filter. Only a light coating of oil, if you put too much on it can mess up your mass air meter.
They say that you can go 50,000 miles between cleanings (They guarantee the filter for 1,000,000 miles!) I only cleaned it about every 20,000 miles. If you drive in dirty areas you may have to do it more frequently.
I was very happy with the filter. Although I did not notice any real performance gain on the mustang, it did save me a lot of money.

I didn't buy the K&N cleaning kit until some time after I first installed the filter.

Ive used K&N in my grand am, suzuki motorcycle and now my TL.
The cleaning kit is a must. GET IT.. Its simple. just spray it, let it set, hose it from the back side, let it dry, re-oil it, and put it back in.
When you hose it off the filter should be almost white.

Over oiling the filter is the biggest problem
The kit has directions
Dont buy one till 10k miles unless you live in a dust bowl.
The 50k thing is advertising they will flow as good as a paper filter new when k&n at 50k
Clean is good!

One kit contains enough to do 5 cleanings and re-oil
Share it with your neighbors !

Thanks for the replies everyone! Man I didn't even realize the filter was good for that many miles before a cleaning! Guess I'll buy the kit some time next year. I'm doing about 16k miles a year so looks like I"ll be cleaning it once a year.

The instructions on the recharger kit call for cleaning every 30-50K miles. Your filtration actually gets BETTER as you accumulate some buildup. I have always replaced stock filters with K&N in all my cars in the last 10 years plus....and not one problem. I drive 40,000 miles per year average, so I clean it once a year.
Only 2 rules to follow:
Don't overoil
If a cold air system, don't run through deep water and risk hydrolock.

A-Spec suspension
K&N Typhoon Intake
245/40/17ZR Michelin Pilot A/S's
DeBadged rear
