Just Made My Fog Lights Double As Daytime Running Lights

Just installed a DRL module (DesignTech Model # 200130) that makes my fog lights run @ 75% intensity when the car is turn on. They also will go off automatically when the head lights are turned on. The head lights and fog lights still work normally. The install was VERY easy and NO wires were cut. There were only 4 wires to hook up. If anyone is intersted just ask, I noted which wires to use, what color, and their locations. I don't want to go in to great detail unless someone is interested.

I did the same last weekend, but left the fog lights at full power.
I need to add the relay that turns them off when the headlights are on though...

How much did the DRL module cost?

I wonder if you could change it from 75% intensity to 100% and again as someone asked above, do the rear lights stay on too?

Auto barn.com

1. Wire goes to postive batery post.
2. Blue wire with yellow stripe at left fog light bulb conector. (hot side of fogs)
3. yellow wire in wiper motor wire harness ( For key on power to tell unit to come on)
4. red wire w/ yellow stripe at left headlight ballast.( this tells the drls to go off when lights are turned on.

No. You cannot supply reduced power to a hid headlight.

no, there are no other lights lit. This system works like factory DRL systems. You could make it work the way you want with a little thought.

This is the 2nd drl system that I have installed. The first one I had you could run them at 100%, but they wouldn't go off when you turned on headlights. That is why I purchased the one I have now.

if you purchase the same DRL module that I did the here are the instructions.
1. Red wire from module goes to postive battery post.
2. Blue wire from module goes to yellow wire in the wiper motor wire harness.(harness is under brake fluid cover. the harness is wrapped in tape and runs up towards left wiper arm. this tell the drls to come on)
3. white wire goes to red wire with yellow stripe at left HID ballast. (Square silver box right behind left head light this tells the drls to go off when the lights are on.)
4. orange wire goes to blue wire with yellow stripe at left fog light connector.(connector that connects to fog light bulb.)
you have one option with the module- you can have the drls stay on for 20 seconds after the key is turned off this feature also delays the drls from comming on for 20 seconds after you start the car. If you don't want this feature then you just simply cut the green looped wire comming out of the module. ( I cut it because I don't need the drls to light my way insid emy garage)

Awesome thread, thanks for sharing!!

Please do post pics whenever you get the chance. I really want to do this mod for my dad. I'm not sure why TLs didn't have this from the get go. I spotted a new IS350 today and it looks like the inner lights are lit like this for its DRLs.

Do you know if there is anyway to turn the DRL off say if you didnt want them on for some reason without uninstalling the device?

All these things are are relays, and a .32 ohm resistor if you want reduced power.
One relay gets pulled in by key on power (wiper motor wire0 and provides power to the fog lights. Another relay can be added from the 12 volt lights on power from the side marker, 12 volt hid module input, etc, and it can pull in the other relay breaking the power to the fogs when the headlights are on.

Awsome, this is deff something I will be doing soon. Do the fog lights stay on when you have the parking lights on? I would imagine that they do because you are tapping into the ballast for the input to turn the fogs off, so the ballast is not powered with the parking lights on.

So this would also be a solution to having the fogs go on without headlights with the parking lights. But the only thing is, there would be no swith on them, which is fine, as long as you can turn them off when the headlights are on.

If you wanted you could wire in a seperate switch to turn the system off.

yes the fogs stay on @ 75% with the parking lights. They will go off once the head lights are turned on.

Don't use the yellow wire in the wiper motor harness. You must use the green wire in the wiper motor harness. I discovered today that by using the yellow wire the drls go off when ever the wipers wipe.

So for direction#3 use the GREEN wire in the wiper motor wire harness.

Talking This is a great find!

I have been wondering how to get this done since i learned that the Canadian TL's had DRL.
One question I have is - Do the fog lights still work with the standard headlights on? I bet they do.

Thanks for the info! Will be watching for the pictures!

I'm definitely doing this but I'm not so handy so once I see some pictures I'll have a better idea of what's involved. Doesn't look too bad but I don't wanna screw it up. Can't wait to see your install guide.

I ordered the part as well, but one vendor (the one that has it for $26, told me its discontinued), but it looks like the order went through the auto barn site.

montyburnz: I will try to take some detailed pics when I install it, its a direct install, tap 2 wires, and use batt for power for the relay and probably a ground.

Now I need to find me some yellow bulbs, for $20 or less.
