Just double checking my oil/filter purchase
 

I need a b1 service, Honda quoted me $230 - ya..no. I asked a friend with an automotive shop how much to rotate tires and change my oil and he asked for a crisp $20. I just found a sale on 4.4L of Mobile 1 (I'll obviously need to get an extra quart).

Anyways, FULL synthetic Mobil 1 5w20 is what I need for my 2006 TL, correct? And the larger Mobil 1 m104 is a-ok too?

Just wanted to double check.

There are a gazillion threads on motor oil and also the Owner's Manual for reference, but the bottom line is that synthetic is not required. As far as the oil filter, if you want a filter that has a larger OD, shorter height, but more capacity, although not needed, the choice is yours.

Do they not run synthetic usually? As far as I know, it's not good to run synthetic in your car if it hasn't always been using it...

that's a myth.
you can switch back and fourth between synthetic and conventional oil if you please.
what turbonut is saying; the manual calls for a 5w20.
however, if you live in a warm climate a 5w-30 is perfect!
and i think the car only calls for 4.2 quarts of oil

i read a bunch of threads saying 4.75 quarts is called for in the manual but 5 quarts puts it at the full line. I guess I'll find out. I got a good deal on the synth from Walmart, so I might as well use it for extra piece of mind. I wasn't aware that was a myth.

Shane, that's the best way to do it. I buy my own synthetic oil (5W20 Mobil 1) and filter for about $50 when it's all on sale and my mechanic changes it out for $10 when he's already swapping out the winter wheels for the summer, or if I'm having other work done.


On that note, I'm getting my summer TL-S wheels put back on today, so I won't be running the winter tires/stock 5 spoke TL rims any more this summer! Yes!!

:thumbsup: Manual calls for 4.5 qts/4.3 l, but may need to check when using a larger filter, and 5w-20 is the recommended viscosity for all temps.

Even the new TL's call for 0-20 2WD and 5-20 SH-AWD, non synthetic.

That's correct, but is it just your "old school" thinking that 5w-20 won't do the job????

Back in the '94 the wife bought a new Z-24, the recommended oil being the new 5w-30 and at that time everyone, including me, thought it to be an oil viscosity that wouldn't protect properly, especially in the summer with that V-6 cranking some RPM's along with the 3 speed A/T, but I figured I'll give it a try. The car was driven to Florida twice and with 185,000 miles it was sold to a neighbor and was like new, never added any oil between changes.
Same with the 2008 knock-around car, just crossed 170,000 miles, only 5w-20 Dino oil with 7,000 mile oil changes. This one has had 4 trips to Florida and is going to be driven until it dies with another trip down south coming in Sept.
