J35A6 swap

So over the weekend I went from 3rd to 2nd at about 6700 rpms, motor now has a loud tick. Top end. Rather than tearing it down I'm thinking about swapping in a j35a6, i just wanted to know if i can straight drop it in or will i need to modify anything?

Reuse your engine harness & intake manifold. The A6 doesn't have the IMRC control on the manifold like the TL.

Also, make sure it ONLY comes out of an EX or LX. The EX-L/Touring models have a J35A7 with VCM & you don't want that drama.

Right on, so pretty much plug n play. My next question would be since the 3.2 is a high compression engine and the 3.5 isn't that not gonna throw the ecu for a loop will it? I dont really think it'll matter but I just wanna be sure before I do this. I'll drive it till it goes completely just wanna get everything straight before that time comes.

I thought the J35A6 from the 2005 Honda Pilot was also a direct fit. Yes, no?

Nice to see that you still retain the knowledge of J series after having fun with CTS-V tho.

Never looked into the Pilot motor but it should be an identical swap.

You'll have no issues at all with the stock TL ECU. I've had an A6 in my 05' 6spd TL for almost 2 years issue free.

I either be doing this when it goes or I had the idea of putting j30a4 heads on my 32a3 block, a buddy has the heads laying around and could get them for dirt cheap. Anything I should know about the heads? I think everything will bolt right up.

Hmmm, for some reason I thought the heads on the J30A4 were essentially identical to the heads on the J32A3 and the J35A6. If that is correct, I'm not sure I see the point of changing the heads.

What’s going on here?

He blew a head(apparently). Wanted a new engine in leu if head replacement. Scraped engine replacement idea. Good buddy has Accord heads that hes checking for fitment. Heads fit from Accord to TL.

What about this is hard to follow?

I thought it was pretty laid out.

The 30a4 heads dont have bent valves, as my 32a3 heads do. Due to an insanely well placed money shift.

Fair enough, based upon the context of the post I responded to, I thought you were doing it for some performance reason.

FWIW, I just looked it up, the heads from the J30A4 are a different product number than those on the J32A3. I expect they'll work, but don't know for a fact.

Right on, do you know if the heads from a j35a8 will fit? I've got a lot of options really and the parts will come cheap.

I believe I've read the J35A8 heads will fit, what I know for sure is the J35A6 heads are the exact same part number as the heads on the J32A3.

The above said, if I was going to go to all of the work of swapping heads, I'd just bite the bullet and buy a clean J35A6 and put it in; the cost delta shouldn't be all that much (unless you're getting heads for free), and the extra low end torque will be nice, especially as the J35A6 is rated for Regular gasoline.

Saving money on gas would be nice but I'm just tossing around with what parts are in front of me now. The heads would be extremely cheap for either set so I'm leaning that way instead of finding a 35a6
