Sorry if not the appropriate forum...

I purchased a $300 item from a private party that was apparently damaged during shipping. The seller bought insurance, and the shipping company, DHL, wants to inspect the packaging. If it doesn't meet whatever criteria they've set, I assume they won't reimburse. If that's the case, what recourse do I have?

I could be wrong, but I've always thought that it's the sellers responsibility to ensure that an item reaches a buyer undamaged and as advertised, and that shipping insurance is offered as protection for the seller, not the buyer. Does anyone know otherwise? If DHL refuses to pay, is the seller then obligated to either replace or repair the item? Thanks.

If DHL accepted the package and sold insurance on it, then it must have met their standards. Why don't you wait until they inspect it before assuming the worst?
