like he said, drivers race.....a 6MT TL would do better than a 5AT tho

Well, this is quite the dilemma. According to track tests by Car and Driver, the two cars are very similar in performance. I only quote C&D because they use a uniform set of rules when testing acceleration used with each test car. That being said, the SE-R and TL that were tested were both manual transmissions with factory tires. The TL has a slightly faster 0-60 time in the tests, but the TL also benefits from a limited slip differential (which the SE-R does not). But in your case, both cars being an automatic and without the limited-slip differentials, the SE-R may have the advantage.
There is only one way to find out though! (do it on a closed track)

AT vs AT, my money would be on the stock SE-R vs the I/E 3G. MT vs MT is a driver's race.
BTW, C/D seems to always report slower than average times on most VQ35DE applications. (I still recall them posting a 14.7sec ET for the 5.5G Maxima 6MT.....when I posted that in my 5.5G 4AT stock.) But in fairness to C/D, most new VQs are slower when green but measurably quicker/faster after break in.

you have to understand that the tires came with the 5AT TL are horrible. You're gonna chip like no tomorrow off the line. I honestly think it's 50/50, but I would give the Altima the edge.
Remember to be smart and race safely. Good luck and let us know the result.

Sorry if this sounds like a rant but I just picture me being 21 out racing and someone getting hurt or killed!

since u guys are both new at this theres a lot of room for error. even tho i do street race myself i strongly suggest u guys not do it on the street and take it to the track. call me a hiporcite if u must but there is alot of things that can go wrong on the street such as other cars and their drivers. its not worth wrecking ur TL over a race, besides its never fun explainin to ur rents how wrecked it, trust me i have already had that convo when i wrecked my 3 series going around a corner hitting a guard rail while racing my friends A-SPEC and im pretty expirienced at street racing its something we do every weekend here. but it just goes to show no matter how expirienced u are, something could go wrong.
