Will a 255/45-17 fit on our stock 04 rims? If so would you think it would be best and safe to drop the profile to a 40 series instead of the 45 to keep the look the same and not make the tire look too tall in the profile.

I also like the look of them stickng out, but that detracts from handling, as the tire that buldges, tends to roll over in corners, the best combo is where the tread patch equals the rim width (in non-all-season tires it does this, in all-seasons, the tread is even less than the rim width).
Also, you need to consider clearances to the body and suspension components.

The 255/45-17 will fit. The overall width is 1 inch larger than the stock 235/45 and the diameter is 1/2 inch larger. This is the size I will be going to (if all is well with fender clearances etc)
