How smart is our maintenance minder system?

***WARNING: LONG MESSAGE AND QUESTIONS . READ WHEN YOU HAVE ABSOULTELY NOTHING TO DO***

I wanted Honcura in Glendale to do my A12 service...at 26,000 miles

He told me that air filter and cabin filter should normally be changed at 30,000 miles...

So, for now, if I go by his recommendation, and just do oil change, and reset the message anyways, what will happen?

1. Will the maintenance minder system pop the same message again, after a while, since it recognizes that those filters still need to be replaced? Is it that smart?

2. Or, will it pop the 12 service message only after another 15,000 miles, which is the next time those filters are due for change?

3. Should I follow the maintenance minder or should I follow the maintenance expert?

It seems like I couldn't get him to do just A12 service...if he is asked to to A12, he'd rather to do major service, including transmission oil change, brake fluid change, etc...

EDIT: It wasn't that long actually...

The Maintenance Minder won't pop up the message to change the air filters at the next service if you reset and don't do them now- it doesn't know if you changed the filters or not. It will give you the "2" message another 15-30K miles down the road.

Have Stan do the service called for by the maintenance minder; go back when you've had the car 3 years, or at 36K miles, to change out the brake fluid and tranny fluid.

Many factors dictate your personal maintenance schedule you are willing to provide for your vehicle. You can take the "lean" approach or go all the way to the "anal" approach. Our MIDs are more inclined to take the lean approach as are the maintenance books and pamphlets you get from dealers. One reason (a main one) is that a lean approach to maintenance is a strong sales tool. If you are not a gearhhead, or car person, and think of a car the same as you do a dishwasher, then you would much rather hear a salesman, or read in a manual, that your perspective new car purchase can go 10,000 miles between oil changes and 50,000 miles on an engine air filter. So where does this leave the more enthusiastic types?

I virtually disregard my MID completely in these areas. I change my oil at 4000 mile intervals on my '04 manual TL and at 5000 mile intervals on my '05 automatic (the one the wife drives). Her TL sees less in-town driving than does mine. I change the cabin and engine air filters once a year on both TLs which works out to be around 14,000 miles.

Parts are relatively cheap and since I do my own work, there is no concern for labor. You can follow your MID and if you only manage to keep your TL for maybe 5 or 6 years, you'll most likely do just fine. So there you are. Frankly it seems to boil down to how anal are you? I am very anal about my personal driving machines, so I follow what I consider to be important.

I was just by the intermittent AZ servers + 5 minute edit time...

FWIW, the brake fluid is a "must change every 3 years" item per the Maintenance Minder, while tranny fluid is changed by many at 30K (rather than the 60K or MM "3" intervals used by Honda and Acura) as a precaution due to the tranny issues in pre-2004 Honda/Acura V6 cars.
