How Quiet is your TL at idle???
 

How smooth or quiet is your TL? When I'm at idle, I can feel the car vibrate. It is not a major vibration but it can definitely be felt thorugh the steering wheel as well as the floorboard. I can also hear a minor humming droning noise. I know others have complained about this but all those complaints where when the car was moving and not idling.

Once my engine is warm-up, my car is really quiet when windows are up, and I feel normal (slight/minor) from the floor.

However, if I roll down the windows in the Garage or in the driver way close to the wall (such as McDonald's drive-thru), the engine noise is there.

Not sure if it is true, but I asked similar questions with my Acura rep. What I was told did make sense to me, even if it may not be accurate.

1. Exhaust note tuning may be percieved as a drone to some.
2. ULEV 2 emmissions can compromise an ultimately smooth idle as well as make occaisional hard starts. (That I did see in the manual).

I still find it very smooth, but we all have our tastes and perceptions of NVH issues.

Minor "humming, droning noise" is probably the fuel pump (normal). My '05 is amazingly smooth and quiet at idle. Vehicle only sounds noisy on rough textured highway surfaces.

IMO, you should not be feeling or hearing what you describe. Mine has 900 miles on it in 3 months and it's like it has no motor at all. Smooth and quiet.

I would bring this up to the dealer and don't let him B.S. you. It "ain't" normal!

So you guys do not feel any vibration feedback through the steering wheel or floorboards at all when the car is at idle and not moving???

How about (for those who have 5AT) the gear in D vs. P or N?

No idle vibrations in park, neutral, or drive. Only thing I occassionally notice is at about 55 MPH after the car has been sitting over night, and that disappear within about 2 minutes of driving, as if slight flat spotting of the tires (Michelins).

yes, in the morning when its cold and i start my car for the day, i hear and feel the valves thrusting, and i can feel this through the steering wheel. i am going to ask about this at my next visit to the dealer.

Snow? Salt? Dirt?
 

Cold Start? In the morning? RPM going high? In those situations, you man hear/feel more from the engine. IMO.

I hear belt noises.. does that mean i need to change my belts?

My car is so quiet that sometimes I don't know if it's on or not. Realy smooth.

I hear it all....and I really don't believe it's normal....

I've had my car for a few weeks now, and it's a smooth as silk. I dont notice any vibrations at all. If your steering wheel is shaking at idle, you should get it checked. Mines doesn't shake.

Yup! Very smooth. Inside rolled up windows, sometime I cannot make out if the car is started or not. No vibration or noise. With rolled down will have to see.

I think it might be the weather.

If you are serious, you may want to go and see an ENT doctor.

I noticed that my TL's RPM jumps up once in a while abt 2K when the heater is on......otherwise it holds pretty steady and quiet when the heater is off. I guess it is normal coz the heater is working...or it isnt???

BTW, it happens when I am stopped at a red light...when my speed is 0 and the shifter is on D.

I have exhaust, maybe helps hear any engine noise....at real cold starts (at least by CA stds) I can hear some engine noise, but after about 2 min it calms down and eveything is normal...as objective is that is....

well, when i first had the car, about below 12K miles, it was as quiet as can be. But now its at 15K miles and at idle, especially in the mornings when its very cold, I hear the valves (or what I think are valves) bumping/pumping.

Its to the point where if I put my head on the headrest I feel my head vibrate a little bit.

Does that sound normal to you guys?

Is your compressor ON?

I'm in the same boat as you. i can feel the vibrations as well. Not sure if we have the same problem tho but my car was quiet and smooth for the first 3000 miles or so. After that was when the vibrations became noticeable. It never really goes away when the car is warmed up. I can still feel the vibrations.

yeah, i guess it doesn't really go away after the car is warmed up either. pretty sad

hummm...I have the climate control on Auto...so I dont think the compressor is working?

If your climate control is on AUTO, it is likely that your compressor is on.

Too damned quiet in my book. That was one of my big complaints when I first got the car. Not enough engine sound making it into the cabin. This tends to disrupt one's shift timing.

Isn't it normal to feel a little vibration in your steering wheel when you're in D? I have never seen an automatic that does not have some sort of steering wheel vibration when you're in gear - it only subsides when you're in Neutral or Park.

My TL only has 500 miles on it, and I feel the vibration in the steering wheel at idle. Right now that's my major complaint with the car. I'll bring it up when I take it back to the dealer for the first oil change.

As for vibration, my TL exhibit virtually none. In fact, if you have the audio system turned up at a light, were it not for the tach, you might not even be aware the engine is idling.

So you don't feel a SINGLE THING in your steering wheel when you're at a stoplight? I always thought it was normal to feel a little bit of vibration through the steering wheel when you're in gear. Perhaps I'm wrong!

Mine is still new and I can't hear it.

I assume you're talking about when you're in first gear ready to take off from a stop light? You don't feel a single thing in your steering wheel?

My TL has the manual transmission and at a light, it's in neutral with the clutch fully engaged (out, foot off like you're supposed to do). Today, I remembered this posting and checked for any steering wheel vibration at at light. I can't say there was none, I can say that it was MOST imperceptable. You would be hard pressed to notice it.

i'll test it again today and post back but as far as i can tell. nothing.

I drove around today and when I'm stopped at a red light in D (I have a 5AT) I can feel the slight vibrations that tell me the car is running. However, when the A/C compressor is on I can feel it more. It's not enough to bother me but I'm starting to get concerned since everyone seems to be saying that their cars don't exhibit any of this!

no vibration here....its pretty damn quiet, sometimes i forget its on, and one to turn the ignitioin on...(but i dont)
