probably about 99% of the time i use auto...those times when i use the SS, sometimes i forget i'm on it when i'm on the streets and i end up over-revving it on first for a few seconds! eeks!

so you know, it will never feel like you are driving a manual but with that being said, i only use it once and a while. usually just off the line so i can hear her scream, but my normal drive is in full auto.

for those who never drive in SS why not?
and another question. say going from second to first if you dont downshift quick enough to first will it do it automatically?

since your only 19, and you sound like you want to be out pimping it like your michael schumacher, i would suggest you get a manual transmission....the sportshift mode on this car is a complete waist of time, the auto mode does a much better job at shifting then you could ever dream of doing in ss mode...the only time i use it is if i want to hold a gear and not let it upshift, or sometimes i use ss to down shift as i am comming up to a light or stop sign....otherwise forget about it...the problem is that honda/acura doesnt use a true double clutch system like the ferraris, porsche, and the lexus is F.....then it would be fun to use the ss mode....dont get me wrong, i like having it and all, but it is useless for the most part....

Burning Brakes
I don't recall hearing any noises when downshifting. Does it do this on every downshift or only on certain gears?
BTW, I don't believe the IS-F uses a double-clutch system. The lockup torque converter engages at all engine speeds from 2nd gear to 8th gear though.

when I had my CL I never used it. If it shifted like a M5 then yes I would use it all the time.
Hell, my sisters Hyundai Santa Fe has SS lol. She just asked me about it last night.
I told her, dont waste your time with it.

The real question, how many of you ever touched the steering wheel paddles?
I almost never use SS mode.. pointless on city roads. But on nice long curvy roads SS is great.

I've been using it more lately just to have fun with it. Faster acceleration off the line and in passing cars. Also feels awesome to hear the car rev up. I wish I had the paddle shifters, make it easier, but then I guess it would take away from the "fun".
When do you guys shift gears? I usually shift when I'm between 4000-5000rpms. That's about 20mph (1st gear), 30mph (2nd), 40mph (3rd). It's so smooth when I do that, I'm sure I could push it to 5000-6000rpms though.
I also downshift to slow down sometimes, is that bad for the car to do that? I remember reading about that on here but forget what was said. I hope not.

Straight line, auto will always beat your SS shifts... so why bother?

Daily
I previously had a last gen Prelude with the same transmission and used it daily. With the TL i use it when slowing down to take corners fast and then throw it back into auto mode. The tranny will shift from 1-2 automatically but will not upshift into other gears, the car will just bounce off the rev limiter... Happened to me when I first started using the system because I came from an RX-8 which revs forever befor the 9000k redline.
I test drove the manual and decided on the Auto for a couple of reasons. First, the stick is extreemly difficult to drive smoothly, there is alot of torque to try to modulate through the front wheels, in the end it wasn't enjoyable. Second, I thought that the resale would be less because I don't feel that many people would want a high end sport-luxury sedan with a manual tranny..
After almost three years and about 35K I haven't regretted the choice at any point... If you want to drive like a friggin maniac on the curvy roads, you have that option, also you can just cruise smoothly and not worry about shifting..

I rarely ever drive outside of SS mode. I miss driving a manual too but something in my mind told me to prepare for the future so I wanted a car that could eventually be a nicely entry level luxury car for my family. Still no girl or kids so no worries so far Got about a year left on her then I'll probably get a beater and let her rest a little more.

We've had a lot of discussions about this-especially downshifting in SS mode when coming to a stop. It was brought up that downshifting might be bad for the transmission though. Did we ever come up with a difinitive answer on that?

^ 100% correct. Use your brakes to slow down the car, thus the ingenious idea of having them. Use SS to prevent gear hunting to maintain a power band coming out of a curve. Maybe if you are tugging something or going up a heavy hill.. I don't see any other uses for SS mode.

i dont see how downshifting will hurt the transmission....if it was bad/hard on your transmission, then there would just be a plus symbol and only one way to shift, and only one paddle on the steering wheel....but there is not, there is a plus and minus on the shift gate, and a paddle on each side of the steering wheel....

Our cars thanks to it's aggressive drive by line, actually does use engine breaking from 3rd to 2nd to 1st when rolling under 20mph... But again.. that's under 20mph... I may only use my tranny to break.. when I'm on ice... and I'm loosing control.. drop the rmps..steer towards the pull, and if necessary use only e-brake to slowly bring the car to a stop.
Acura was never known for it's awesome trannies...especially on 3.2.

when i was at the azine meet saturday i was using SS pretty much the whole time and i had plenty of time to have fun with the paddle shifters. i mean thats what theyre there for and i dont see how anyone can take that drive we did without using them.
