How many spark plugs do we have?

I know, stupid question, but how many spark plugs do we have in our TLs? 6?

that would be 6

Every car has one spark plug for each cylinder. TL has 6 cylinders, therefore 6 sparkplugs.

And yes it was a stupid question :)

Not true, new Ford 6.2 has 2 per cylinder.

TL has 6.

LOL. I knew someone was going to say it eventually.

1 per cylinder for like 99% of the cars out there. Some oddballs like some Ford 2.3s and certain Toyotas. More of an emissions thing than anything else.

^haha sorry I just had to

swoosh 09-03-2010 08:00 PM

6 ??? i thought we had 14 upfront and 3 in the back....under the engine....

mb1976 09-03-2010 08:04 PM

Don't forget the Nissan Hardbody pickups trucks from 1987 - 1990 those had 2 plugs per cyl which in turn was 8 plugs on a 4 cyl truck

I seem to recall a Nissan engine that had two plugs per cylinder.

What's the advantage of multiple plugs per cylinder?

LostSol 09-03-2010 08:50 PM

From Edmunds Inside Line's Dyno of the F-150 Raptor 6.2L:

"a measure made necessary by the large-diameters cylinder bores -- large combustion chambers burn their contents more slowly than compact chambers"

Turbonut 09-03-2010 10:39 PM

Current Dodge Hemi-2 plugs per cyl. One fires on compression, the other on exhaust to help emissions.

AMUA6 09-03-2010 11:15 PM

^^^ Interesting.. I've never heard of this.

I have 12.

But then again, I've got 2 TL's.

Are you sure they have two plugs or do you mean the waste spark method with a single plug?

Even my old GN uses the waste spark method of firing each plug on power and on exhaust. It fires backwards on the exhaust stroke (outer to center).

In my case it wasn't for emissions, just what happens with one coil for two cylinders.

rully1012 09-04-2010 12:05 AM

yes so did my old 2004 dodge ram hemi 2 per cylinder
almost all but not all

csmeance 09-04-2010 01:23 AM

I have 28 in my garage, 12 in the 760, 6 in the TL, 6 in the MDX and 4 in the accord :tomato: Good luck with whatever you do decide to do! FYI if you are changing the plugs, USE ONLY THE NGK Iridiums! Don't go with denso!

No wasted spark on the Hemi, at least the daughter's 2005, as there is a dedicated plug wire that runs across the engine to fire the plug on exhaust the same time the other cylinder is firing on compression.
The Mazda rotary has 2 plugs per housing that fire 20 degrees apart (leading and trailing) to better burn the mixture, but the leading plug also has a wasted spark as both leading plugs fire at the same time in housing 1 & 2 while only the trailing plugs fire when needed on compression. At least one can't mix up the leading plug wires.

The Mercedes M112 & M113 engines also use 2 Plugs / Cylinder, again mostly for emissions.
