How many seconds roughly for AT to engage into gear for your TL?

Shifting from Park to any Gear, for example, Drive

Takes a good full second, whereas in all other cars I've owned, pretty much instant.

It's rather annoying when doing a quick u-turn in a small street, where I need to brake, gear change Rear, wait, gear change Drive, wait, Go.

Shifting is otherwise great, during straight driving

There something wrong with my TL?

How fast does your TL shift?

thats about right actually- even though its electronic there is a delay
If it gets to be more than 2 seconds from N to D then the trans has a problem
In a quick turn situation try giving it just a touch of gas

Yep it's pretty anoying but I guess it is normal. It happened on my last car too (03 Acura CL) and now it happens on my 07 TL-S. Funny thing it doesn't happen on my GF's 03 accord or my brothers 2000 Galant or his wifes 03 Camary. Must be an acura thing.

Will the new solenoids make it shift instant, or will it still have a sec delay? Is it also that DIY that is posted in the garage?

There's always going to be a delay. Replacing the 3rd and 4th gear sensors helped mine. Depending on the miles you may want to look at replacing the filter and fluid.

Good thing you don't drive a Mercedes ML550, f'n thing takes forever to engage when you're trying to reverse. We took it to 3 dealers to check and they said it was operating normally.

I remember after the last mountain run with my TL, I would charge uphill for about 8-10 miles going up to about 4500-5000RPM on each gear.

When I parked at the top and let the car cool down for a couple minutes the trans got so hot, it took a good solid 3 seconds to engage from P > D.

Scary stuff .. but 10,000 miles after that the car still shifted smoothly and gave me 0 problems.

Yes, I notice a bit of a delay, but not more than one second. My old '02 Accord V6 did the same.

Probly about a second - def. noticeable, and annoying, but you get used to it. Otherwise it shifts through the gears perfectly. No other auto I've driven has had the slight delay, though. Drove an 04 V6 Accord, belongs to a guy at work, and it didn't do it that i recall. My RL didn't do it.

Does not sound like there is anything wrong with your car. But when was the last time you changed the fluid, and what climate/temps are you running the car in? Recently picked up a '05 AT in Ont Canada noticed it delays maybe a sec when cold, and once warm is maybe 1/2sec.

Talked to my Acura mechanic buddy he told me the oil needs to come up to operating temp before the transmission computer lets it engage and shift quicker. I also noticed when cold the car holds the revs to help get the oil warmed up quickly. Once warm she shifts like butter.

Also heard the newer trans fluid from Acura/Honda is
synthetic and way better than previous oil.

Anyone tried Red Line High-Temp ATF GL-4 in their 3rd gen?

There's an elaborate thread on this. We've done the D4, Racing, and lightweight racing. The concensus is the non FM racing fluid (and lightweight racing) is by far the best for the TL for reducing wear. Shifts are very quick and crisp but you can barely feel them. It makes a huge difference in the amount of stuff stuck to the magnet when you change the fluid.

Mine was really delayed before I changed ATF. Once I went to Redline D4 it greatly reduced the P-R-D shift delay and also made the 1st-5th shift so smooth that you can't even feel it.

About 1-2 second delay. The worst is when my father drives my car- he has the habit of changing gears before the car is fully stopped. Gah it makes me cringe when the car lurches forward into drive while moving out of reverse. The 5AT in our TL's isn't really the greatest tranny out there.

if im reversing.. i usually put it in reverse, then throw it to neutral while still rolling backwards, and finally brake completely and shift into drive when im rdy to go forward.. haha i believe it cuts delay a little.. and im not FLYING in reverse right before I put it in drive, so I believe its safe?

I've learned to time it right so that I'll be putting the shifter into D before the car comes to a complete stop, but it engages at around the same time I do stop.
