How good is Acura's extended warranty program?

I just bought a 2005 TL and still undecided on whether to get an extended warranty on it.

I am not sure how much I can trust the dealer because if I get the warranty and something happens to my car the dealer will always try to reduce their own cost on the coverage and I'll end up getting poor service. If I don't buy the warranty, I pay for repairs but I can rest assured that I will be getting a good service.

It's been 2 days I bought the car and the batteries already went dead yesterday morning. It was -30 C outside and no I did not leave any lights on overnight.

Any thoughts on the extended warranty?

I have it for my 05. Only used it once so far on the power steering whine in which they replaced the pump. I also used it to repair the driver's window channel, but I was charged for the weather stripping.

Also, with all of the electronics in this car, I think it was a good purchase.

As with any policy, you think you may need the protection sometime in the future, while the provider believes the cost of the coverage will be more than any repairs, if any are even necessary. Many items are not covered under the Acura Care Care warranty, so make certain you read and know the coverage, and the battery is not covered.
I have another year remaining on the warranty, and haven't needed to use it yet, but you never know, especially with the Nav system, but if I don't use it, it would be $890 down the drain, but one never knows.

I'd be interested to hear about the warranties people have purchased. I just bought a 2004 TL and am considering buying one. Any ideas on a solid warranty for a good price?

Thanks.

I was thinking about getting an extended warranty too for my '06 when i bought it, but i didn't. I think as long as you keep up with your car you'll be fine.

Exactly what I was thinking. Acura's are already one of the most reliable in it's class, plus the warranty you buy is for the most reliable years of the car when the chances of break down are the least. If we could buy a warranty for after 5yr/100K, that would make more sense.

Also on used cars don't you think the auto industry has the entire buyer population fooled with the wording on their warranty? I buy a 5 yr old car ... and the warranty they try to sell me is 7yr/130K, and I pay the full price of it. WHY? Technically what I am getting is only 2 more years and 70K more may be. Why should I pay for 7yr?

i just bought my 06 TL and bought the warranty. for an extra 1300 i got both lifetime/unlimited bumber to bumper and drive/powertrain. I think it was well worth it and i've got that peace of mind.

Consumer Reports did a study on extended warranties. They found that only about 30% of the people that bought them broke even on them. In other words, 70% of the people who bought them lost money on the deal.

This isn't surprising. If Acura didn't make a profit, they wouldn't sell extended warranties.

It's a gamble that you have a 30% chance of winning.

4yrs/90k miles later, I've had no issues that would have needed the use of a warranty. The cost of the warranty in and of itself is about equivalent to the cost of fixing 1 major issue. So really, you would need to have multiple major breakdowns for it to pay for itself.

I bought an extended warranty, but that's a good point about Honda reliability.

Exactly. I ended up buying mine and it has been the biggest PITA ever. Remember, it's not an Acura factory warranty, it's "AcuraCare" that's a third party deal, and they don't cover anything.

its always a good thought to consider buying an extended warranty, especially if factory warranty is almost up.... keep 1 thing in mind aswell... if you are buying a MT TL, 3rd Gear issue is covered and NO one should give any heck for it as its in their honda data base that they check for all warranty issues... but that 3rd gear popping out is very annoying...

Neal,

How much does it cost to fix the 3rd Gear issue?

Does it cost more or less than the extended warranty?

I was offered Canadian $2100 + 13% tax for the 7 yr / 130K kms warranty. 7 yr starts from the original purchase date which was in July 2005 and I have 63 K Kms on the car.

I will get 2 yr and 5 months and 65K kms more for $2373. I think it's a rip off.

I have no idea, I have a 5at, and I paid like 300 for the warranty.... I'm sure it was more, but that's how it was written into the deal.
