There was a good thread about this a long time ago in the 2nd gen forum. Supposedly one guy got his TL-S up to 158mph... I haven't tried, but I'm pretty sure the 2nd gen is not limited.

I'm not a hippocrite and I don't drive like a grandpa.
I could understand 80 mph up to even 100 which is already balls to the wall dangerous and against the law almost everywhere.
[RANT]But you guys reporting 130 to 145mph are plain ignorant and a menacing.
I'd completely bet that those of you that did pull speeds like that have no clue what the consequences of making a slight mistake at those speeds would do to you or anyone unlucky enough to be near you. God forbid at night in the dark where you would never see far enough ahead of yourself to have a hint of enough reaction time.
There was a post asking what would make this forum better. Locking stupid dangerous Fast & Furious posts like this would be a step in the right direction.
Unless of course this is the type of demographic this place it trying to cater to.
There are places to drive stupid fast, and I guarantee your asshole will pucker at half those speeds if you actually took a corner instead of trying to do a straight line land speed record.
[/END RANT]
Be safe guys, take it to the track.
Find a club like SCCA.ORG or NASA.ORG that hosts open track educations/HPDE's and go have at it in a proper environment with proper instruction and education.

There are lots of earlier threads. The top speed is limited by ecu. It will be about between 147-152 depending on when your car starts cutting out the engine. And the car has the power to go faster.

I can say in my case, I did it very early Sunday morning on a limited access
road with lots of space and a good view of what was coming up.
Yes, any mistake at that speed and its all over.

This is one of many threads on this subject that have been posted here. Some of the others are linked below.
We do not condone driving at these speeds, and your comments are good advice to those who might contemplate exceeding the speed limit in a dangerous manner, but these threads also educate, by the posting of comments such as yours, people who might be tempted to test the limits of their cars.
Thank you for taking the time to inform those among us who might not know how to handle the speeds attained by our TL's.

It's not a 3rd gen, but it is a TL, a non-S 2nd gen. This was about 4 or 5 years ago... What was I thinking...
As for my 3rd gen... not even over 100... there's no point.
(no, i didn't take the pic while driving).

140ish 3am thursday morning in 4th gear only. Just made some adjustments on my dampers earlier this week and wanted to wait a couple of days for dry and clear roads to get a good test drive. Keep in mind I'm riding on 19's, low profile tires, lowered suspension with a-spec body kit. The car felt so smooth. I would never have attempted this riding stock on the POS EL-42's and 17's on stock suspension.
I was minding my business when an older accord, sentra, and older maxima were driving around me revving their riced out whips. I could hear the exhaust and see the gauges. The TL whooped azz like no other. I passed the maxima going 120. The look on his face (my eyes on the road but peripheral vision entailing) was classic! 3 cars killed in 1 setting.....delightful. That should hold me over for the next 12 months.

Speed limiters are used so the car does not exceed the rating of the tires which would entail a liability for the mftr. The TL's tires are rated at 165 MPH so there is no need for a top speed limiter.
The theoretical top speed, in a vacuum, is over 200 MPH. In practice, with a slight down grade and a following wind, you might see close to 155 MPH on a good day with cool air and a manual tranny.

Holy shit Ive been faster than all of you!!
232 KM/H with four ppl in the car on a slight downgrade .
Thats 142 M/PH indicated. Was smooth and tight. I could feel the aerodynamics working too. Making me stick to the road.

Good to know. I live about 90 minutes from the Bonneville Salt Flats, and if I can get out there before it gets too wet, I'll see what it can do!

That was probably due to the roads you were driving on... At 150 mph in my TL it felt very solid.. More solid than the Audi S4 I owned previously...

I went Mach 2 once, on a British Airways Concorde coming back from London.
Fastest I've driven the TL is about 100 mph, mainly because I simply haven't had a clear road where I was comfortable trying to go faster. Too much traffic in Virginia. Now I was out of town for Thanksgiving and Alligator Alley (I-75 across the Everglades) was fairly wide open last Saturday night driving back to Fort Myers from Miami, but since I don't know the road, had had a few beers at the football game, and was told the cops were supposedly out there (turned out they weren't), I wasn't comfortable going faster at night through there.
Now on the way DOWN to Miami I had a sustained run of 95 mph for most of the way across Alligator Alley. In some ways that's the better question—not "what's the fastest you've had the TL," but "what's your fastest sustained run in the TL." The car LOVED going 95 mph and got pretty good mileage too.

Had my 6MT TL at dead on 145 (indicated) on my favorite "high speed" stretch of road. Car seemed like it was still pulling well.
Had my s2000 at 147 (indicated) with the top down. Still had some left in it. Same stretch of road. The wind starts to roar at that speed sans top. I still miss that car...
The s2k's spedo is off by 5-6 MPH so the TL may have been the faster of these two runs.
