how do you find out if your gate or garage opener is compatible w/ homelink? my gate opener has ten switches, and my garage opener has 8 switches. Or is mine garage opener to obsolete for this?

It should work fine. Homelink works with older fixed code systems, as well as the newer rolling code systems. You train it with your remote.
