HID Ballast – saga continues

My left ballast broke a few weeks ago. I ordered a morimoto ballast, igniter, and TRP morimoto to 9006 adapter for right and left from The Retrofit Source.

The adapter was advertised to avoid the need to splice but it was a close but not exact fit for my 2005. Finally, after some time with a dremel, I realized it would need too much modification (FYI, in the photos on their website, some of the adapters look compatible, others do not. I think they changed their design and I have one of the more recent designs), so I decided to cut off the adapter’s Honda end and splice their adapter onto my car's harness. After a few crimping failures, I realized the adapter wiring is not 14 gauge as they claim on the website, but 18 gauge. I’m certain the harness wiring is at least 14 gauge at that terminal.

Questions.

1) Would it be fine to just use the TRP adapter 9006 head and use my own 14 ga wiring.

2) Can anyone suggest a 9006 head that is robust to match the 14 gauge wiring.

I’ve done a fair amount of splicing on a 12v sailboat but dealing with a 50k volt ballast is new. Any good places to research or tips?

Sorry to keep dipping into the well but as these cars get older, lots of unique things break, and a lot of these repairs are not well documented.

I did, hopefully they have some of the old stock. In the adapter pictures on their website, some of the adapters look like they could fit our hondas. Other images show the new design. When I ordered the honda ballasts, the adapters were a link suggested buy. Now when I click on the honda ballast kit, they no longer link the adapter so I imagine they recently became aware of the issue.

knowing TRS, i think they will make it right for you. This system has been touted as the fix for these cars for a while now but i also remember them having a Mitsubishi and a Matsushita option. Good luck!

Thanks for the reply. From reading old posts on this site and looking at the pictures of the adapter on their website, I think they used to have a more robust adapter that was compatible with the TL. The new stock, or at least what I received, is not compatible and has a smaller gauge than factory wiring.

Unfortunately, TRS claim that the adapter description does not mention it is compatible specifically with the TL just with Honda/Acura so it looks like I'm out of luck on that side. They didn't address the fact that the wiring is 18 not the 14 they claim.

Anyone have a trusted source for a 9006 head that is robust enough for the amps these HIDs pull?

Thoiboy was right. They are offering to refund the adapter. They refund is appreciated and they are a class act.

If anyone knows where I can find a 14ga compatible head, please respond. I'm thinking of using this one from dorman, anyone have any experience with it.
