Help me talk myself into an '08 Type S

Always liked the styling and now need the reliability. Really tired of taking the Benz in for repairs!
The performance of the Type S shouldn't be a big step down from the C32. Lots of good reasons to make this move.
Thoughts about this particular car? Saw it in person and appears to be in great condition. Yes, priced kind of high but typical for this nutty area. A little puzzled by the carfax - auction and an emission test failure. These have any pattern of emission system issues?
Thanks in advance for any advice!

My guess is it didn't pass emission test because someone reset check engine light due to "Tighten gas cap" issue before auctioning it and they only realized that check engine light was reset during the test.

Cars always cost more in CA then anywhere else Ive seen some people here buy TL for 15k with low miles while i bought my base TL for 18K with 72k...The price we pay for California

looks (and pretty much IS) just like my recently bought cbp tls
I used to drive a c-class as well (though a 230komp, not a c32). I'm really happy with the TLS both inside and out - it's a great machine, looks awesome and is probably a lot easier to maintain / repair than the MB (which is why my family let go of the benz..). If you go with the TLS you won't be disappointed. After owning the car for a month I couldn't be happier with the choice. That price seems a little steep though (definitely higher than dealership blue book - haggle that thing down!)
Also, where you at in the bay area? Good luck with the decision!

I'm biased as I am an 08 TLS owner and know too many folks that have had issue with their Audis and MBs. Hard to beat Japanese reliability

Thanks guys for the feedback. I like this color (white is the only one I like even more) and the fact that windows are not tinted. I will go test drive the car, hopefully tomorrow. It will be interesting to see how much I notice the torque steer coming from RWD.
Re the price, dealers here are even bigger rascals than elsewhere. It's an uphill battle. They assume that someone else will walk in with more cash in hand thanks to tech stock options - and that's often true! Of course the playing field is more level for cars nobody cares about. A used Ford Taurus could be had for a song!

thats a really nice car, maybe because i own this same one. i came from bmw's and the torque steer is noticeable in the beginning but you get used to it, i dont notice it anymore. i've been contemplating selling to go back to european but reliability and ease of repairing keeps me loving my TLs, good luck on purchasing, its priced a bit high, but thats dealers for you

$25,000 is too much for an '08 Type S.

^I agree the car is nice, but the price seems high and the miles are just average and not low miles. I just checked auto-trader and entered my zipcode 92009 with a 50 mile radius and got tons of hits with no car priced higher than the OPs choice.
If white is the OP's color choice you can get one with 42k miles in San Diego for $24,300 and I would think the dealer would come down $1000 too. That would easily pay for a one way trip and you might even save a little in sales tax too.
If you don't care about mileage, I see a Black TL Type S in Tustin for $17,895 with 86k miles.
While cars are expensive in CA- they are much more expensive in Northern CA in my opinion.

When I got mine, I got the price down to $20.5K, and also negotiated another $1K more for my trade in (they gave me more than my car was worth instead of lowering the base price more), so effectively got it for $19.5K. 10k more miles than that one.
Maybe you'll fare a little better price-wise in the San Jose area? I figure the farther away you are from SF and Palo Alto, the more reasonable the prices will be. I got mine from a dealership on Stevens Creek, in Santa Clara / San Jose - there's no way I would have paid as much as they're asking at Hopkins...

I would be glad to sell you my ASM 2008 TL Type S. It's in great shape and runs like new. It only has 231K on it. Yes, the mileage is correct. How many BMW's can claim that? I hope this helps you with your decision.

Price is steep. shop around a little more for a TL S a bit cheaper. You'll be mad at yourself later if you found out you could of got something with better miles and price.

Absurdly high. Take your time and find a private owner, and save yourself 7 grand. '08s Type Ss can be had all day for 18-19K. This lower mileage is worth about $750 more. Dang how I hate car dealerships! They're just skunks. Good luck.

I dunno what ppl are talking about saying CA has the highest prices. Here in SoCal we have cheapest everything when it comes to cars, especially the parts. Hookups everywhere. But even for cars themselves its still cheap, I got my 07 TL-S with 74k miles back in 2011 for 17.5k OTD. Prices were a little higher back in 2011 too.

Well, I test drove this particular car today.
For starters, kudos to you existing TL-S drivers for discovering this gem long ago. What a great car. Was quick, handled well and I didn't even notice the torque steer. The manual mode was also tight and responsive (better than my AMG frankly).
The bad news is that you were also right about this particular example being overpriced. This "creampuff" (how can it be that dealers are still using this term?) isn't exactly. There were a number of splotchy marks on the exterior paint, like it drove through acid rain. The interior had a number of surface areas showing wear, including the steering wheel and parking brake. Worst of all, there was a four inch gash in the back seat! It looked like some clown tried to repair it with Elmer's glitter glue.
So, a $25k+ model it was not.

Don't give up, keep looking! If you're willing to go through the trouble of selling the Benz yourself instead of trading it in, you're bound to find a much more reasonable price buying from a private seller.

You might want to try and check CL or Autotrader.com or other similar sites.

I looked at this same one about 2 weeks ago. The hood was horrible, like someone tried to use touch up paint on multiple spots. They've had this one priced the same for at least 2 months. I can't believe they haven't lowered the price yet, these damn dealerships.

This car could never be a $25K car, unless the buyer is a fool.
Yesterday I was getting my oil changed at Acura, and saw a showroom featured 2010 loaded TL with 45K miles for $24,950 starting asking price. This is still a ripoff, but for someone to think they could get that much for a two year older, previous generation car is silly.
