Help - how to read VIN in Canada

Alrighty kids... I've searched the net and I've searched these forums. I know it was posted here several months ago but I simply cannot find the information. I'm trying to decipher my VIN # to find out when my vehicle was manufactured (which month).

I have no problems at all with my car - it is so sweet! I'm just being inquisitive and want to find out which month.

But I recall reading in a post a few months ago that the VIN # reading is different up here in Canada. So if any of you kind folks can help me out, I would be most grateful.

Cheers!
Charles

Thank you for the reply. I found a few sites like that and finally figured out the last 6 digits are the build sequence. But I thought I read in a post somewhere that the Canadian version of the build sequence is different than the US. In the last few digits in US it identifies month etc. I am not sure about the Canadian one... is it just a sequence as they are rolled off or do the numbers mean something.

Any insight is appreciated.

Check the door post between the front and rear doors on the drivers side. You'll find a sticker with the build date. Canadian TL's start with a vin of
80 xxx

Alrighty - Charles is now having a conversation with himself. After doing a bit more digging, I found the standard. If any Canadians are interested, here is the link.
http://www.tc.gc.ca/acts-regulations...NORP.J7MUME.N2

So - basically the last 6 digits are just a sequence as the car is manufactured. What I don't know is if the sequence applies to all cars of the same type including Canadian and American distribution. Or does it apply only to those cars destined to Canada.

My last 5 digits are 00387. So I guess what I'm trying to figure out is. Do I own the 387th 2004 Acura TL built, or is the 387th 2004 Acura 6MT built, or is it the 387th 2004 Acura TL built for Canadian distribution.

Oh well - I guess it doesn't really matter. I was just trying to figure out if I had an early build or not.

Once again - any insight is appreciated
Cheers!

I think the last 5 digits is the actual car number. The Canadian ones have a separate number as the models are different from the US (drl's, low ww bottle alert on mid, no xm radio, different navi software english/french replaces male/female voice etc.). Mine was one of the early ones late October and my vin ends in 00926. At the same time the US cars were in the 9 - 10,000 range.

Thanks kids!

I checked the sticker on the door as you suggested and sure enough there it was 10/03. So my car was built in October ... and I bought it in October.

So the mystery has been solved. And yet another happy TL driver takes to the streets!

387 for the 2004 model year. There's another digit in the VIN which is the model year. So next year the last 6 digits will roll over and somebody else will also have 387 for Canada for '05.

Canadian cars last 6 digits start with "8" = 8XXXXX, and US cars start with "0" = 0XXXXX.

Vins are also explained here http://www.acura-tl.com/forums/showt...threadid=67654

Hello Jss1

I note you have window tint installed. Have you had any problem with scratches?

None at all and the titanium in the tint is inert and doesn't affect the navi. It is a lifetime guarantee also.
