HELP. Broken engine mount --dealer charges ripoff
Ok so i go into dealership for my Acura TL 2008 sedan for oil change and break service for $200. Then at the end they tell me i have Broken Engine mounts and it will cost ~$1000 to fix. They say if i don't fix it, my engine could fall down or parts of engine could break. So my TL has around 126,000 miles on it and i have NO symptoms of engine mounts broken like Vibration and so on. I had no idea they were broken, actually. 1 tire is worn down to 0, kind of odd while back 2 tires are at 6 and 1 of the front is at 3. Anyway, this engine mount for $1000 seem real ripoff to me. Would it such a big problem in the future if i don't fix the engine mounts ? Or can i get this new engine mount somewhere else much cheaper ? Please Help with your expert opinions. Thank you in advance.

Tire wear is most likely unrelated and you probably just need a good alignment done.
On the motor mount you should find out which one it is or if they are saying it is all of them and then actually look at them yourself. The one can be clearly seen and the other you can get to with a little digging around. $1000 is a ripoff. You need to at least check them out and if I was you I would replace the one by myself or with a mechanically inclined friend and spend my money on tires. You cant get around spending the money on tires. If youre gonna splurge on any one thing for your car it should be that. Then get the other mount fixed after a quote from a smaller shop. You can find out the exact locations of the mounts by searching, there are also trans and maybe a subframe mount.

Find an independent shop to get another quote. Dealers always charge much more than private shops. Broken motor mounts will damage the car and put strain on other parts that will fail. Another issue is you having service done at the dealer, they are assuming you are pretty naive about cars when you do this. Most people only service their cars at dealers when the car is pretty new, those who continue to pay a premium by using the dealer for service after that point don't know any better and are usually ripped off.

I just recently had an engine mount replaced as mine was torn badly as well. The shop ordered the part for 67 dollars CAD, and installed it for free. Find a reputable shop in your area and get it done, forget the dealer

Thank you, they also want to charge me $210 more for break fluid change, which i thought was bit much. and what do you think about Hankook Tires, i can get 2 of these for around $300 from the dealer. but these tires are very noisy and also didn't last very long. but also i don't want to pay$250 per tire for Michelline, since my car is getting old with 126,000 miles on it. Is there another good brand of tire for arond $150 each that is better than Hankook ?

Costco currently has a sale on Michelins. I've had Hankooks on another vehicle, no problems, but for $15 more I'd get the Pilot Sport A/S+
I see no reason to take an older vehicle that's out of warranty to a dealership for routine work. Reputable private shops will flush and replace brake fluid for $100 or less.
If you are seriously on a budget you can find even cheaper, but for work like brake lines, I don't mind paying $20 more to know it was properly flushed and there won't be leaks.

Yes i agree, Dealership is telling me that it is 3 Hour labor minimum and there is no way you can do this for less than $900-1000. How did other people get this done in 1 hour, I only have 2 engine mounts that is broken,,,,,,,,,One in the front and one on the side of engine, i was told

I am told by several autoshops that sell tires that Hankook Noble tires blows away that Continental tires every time in all categories and they say they would use Hankook over Continental every time......

What does the age and mileage of the car have to do with the quality of the tire? It shouldn't matter if the car has 100 miles or 200k miles on it...don't cheap out on the tires.
Nobody paid to get the front and side mounts done in "1 hour". The side mount is 15-30 minutes for you to do it yourself with a set of sockets in your driveway. The front mount....well...I don't know, I haven't changed mine yet, but I know it isn't as simple. Anyone that got it done for an hour got a friend hook-up or that is just how long it actually took them to do it.

i took my car to them for my 105k service, which is almost a 6hr job. during the service, the found the broken mount and replaced it free of charge......seeing as I paid nearly 700 dollars in labor, I think it was a way of thanking me lol.

yes, conti does seem to have higher rating than Hankook. anyway just broken in at 126000 miles ?? LOL. This car really last that long ? it seems like now things are starting to fall apart and it is costing me a fortune to fix things now. and there is this Rusting area in the metal below the real Window inside the trunk,, and it is getting worse and worse. it's been there for 1.5 years now and it getting worse. I am afraid the metal will rust Thru in that area and i was told once that happens , the real window could Crack. That is not good. You still think i could keep the car til 200K ????

Yea, i think you are right. I am not sure where that Ratings for the tire came from but that Continental seem much higher rated than Hankook. I am going to buy 2 continental in the front only for now since rear is still 5 left. I willl see how Continental will compare to Hankook this way,,,by feeling how the front drives versus the Rear drives.... i think

I would never recommend Pilot Sport A/S+ to anyone for the TL...search the forums for the fun these brought to many of us on funky wear in less than 20k miles. Nice tire...just wore out waaaaaay too quickly with non-spirited driving.

Hey Guy, i have a problem here. I went to local generic auto shop and they quoted me the price for 2 engine mounts, side and front, it is $730 total. this is NOT good, not sure what to do now ????????????? i would like to wait but recently i am noticing the Car Shaking when i press on the Accelerator. Not sure if this is due to broken engine mounts or not ?? It doesn't shake all the time but just time to time when i press on the accelerator............oh boy.....
I had a set of Hankook summer sports tires and they were amazing. They were actually my favorite tire ive had, not that ive had a lot of new ones and those are a totally different thing, all seasons and summers are very different. I have Michelin mxm4 on my TL and they seem very reasonable, good at everything but not excellent at any one thing. Tires in the size for the TL are expensive and it will be hard pressed to find a tire for $150 id bet. I think the michelins i have were like $230 each. They were like 80% still when I bought the car. 20,000 miles later they are now about 50%.

That sounds like the mounts broken loose to me but maybe one is still holding it in place. Its not like this thing is a broken or not part. They seperate over time but if you are the point where it is noticable you need to fix it. Especially if you had another shop tell you the same thing.

but i was told once the car exceeds 120,000 miles, it will start to break down and start to cost big money every year, like $1500 per year on average.

Jim get your work done at Mira Mesa auto techs. They are very good and one of the cheapest places around.
whoever told you about 120k lied. These cars last a very long time if you take care of routine maintenance (fluids, brakes, etc).
Don't go cheap on tires they are one of the most important pieces on your car. I currently have continental dws06 tires. If you want cheaper with good quality check out kumho ecsta 4x or the general g max.

Point being is it is all about how diligent you are in checking your own vehicle and how far you are willing to go to do your own work to bring costs down.

It all depends what you are willing to do yourself. Like I just went to the dealership for inspection and they quoted me about $2000 to fix a bunch of things and diagnose some minors problems. I fixed the three major things comprising over $1800 of the required repairs and I did it for about $110. These were normal things that could happen on ANY vehicle and I have had all of these things happen on previous cars I have owned. I had to replace a wheel bearing, get some condensation out of a headlight, and replace a switch on the brake light (that wasnt even broken, they lied and tried to screw me over).

Have you done t-belt? I ask since depending which mounts went bad when i did my tbelt service i paid for mount on side and they installed it for free.
BTW: Oil and brake service for $200 also sounds awfully cheap. They used syntehtic and just replaced pads?

Sure thats possible but what are your options? Buy a new car, assuming this car is paid off, and be stuck with a car payment and likely higher insurance? And $1500 is not unreasonable try looking at annual costs for some of the euro cars, those numbers will make you thank the powers above that your driving an acura/honda.

If you are for sure unable to do any of your own maintenance, you pretty much have two options:
1.) Continue to pay high labor and part costs at the Acura dealership
2.) Find an alternate trusted shop to do the maintenance for you
If anything, at least check into your local Honda dealerships. Quite often they are cheaper than Acura and comparable to other local shops. At least that is how it is for me in the KC area. My timing belt service at the Honda dealer was within $100 of any other shop, they used genuine Honda parts, and they were quite a bit closer to my house.
