Head unit output and speaker ratings?

Does anyone know the power ratings offhand? I am looking to replace the headunit with a Nav/cd/mp3/dvd/xm player. I love the DVDa and think the cd sound is just "ok". I could just as well do without the DVDA and have a much better sounding cd player as I have about 500 cd's and 3 DVDA's. Anyone change the head unit? This would probably be a question for the non nav owners as the nav is too tightly integrated I would think. Thank you in advance.

My advice

Off hand I would say that each speaker is probably getting around 30-35 watts per speaker. I listened to a TL the other day and your right the stereo is clean but doesnt have that umphh to make you feel the music. Honestly I would purchase an after market amp first and run that and see how it sounds. I recommend the JL Audio 300.4. I payed around $400 for it. 75 watts per channel, 4 of them. The reason I say dont start with the radio first is because I havent seen a dash kit yet that fits this car. It will probably cost you much more than normal to get a desired look because it will be a custom job and those install guys get at least 50 bucks an hour, it adds up quick. Normally an amp will cost around 55 bucks to hook up, wires included. Other good thing about JL is that you dont have to run the 14.4 volts into the amp to get max power like all these other amps that neglect to tell you this! You can run 12-14 volts and always get that 75 watts of power. Not the 1000 watt max at 190 volts like these other crap amps!

I agree, if you swap out the factory unit, you are liable to lose alot of the voice controls and what not. I plan on going with the stock unit and a few JL slash series amps. I think you would be just as happy with an amp for the speakers and a new sub amp combo.

Hello All,
I can tell you what I did to enhance the factory sound of my 2004 TL. I removed the factory subwoofer and replaced it with a ported subwoofer enclosure. I used a pair of 8 inch Audiobahns for the woofers. Powering the subs is an Audiobahn amp.

I had to use speaker level inputs to the amp supplied by the rear subwoofer. Since there is only one pair of speaker wires powering the sub, I split them in two for supplying the signal to the amp.

The subwoofer box is approximately 1.8 cubic feet total volume with no divider between the woofers. This is the specifications Audiobahn recommended. I aimed the single port (3 inch ISD) where the factory subwoofer used to be so I can enjoy the bass frequency inside the passenger compartment.

It's defiantly what the factory system was missing. I kept the same stock look, functionality and appearance, the great DVDA feature we all enjoy and only gave up a small amount of trunk space. Any professional audio shop would charge around $1000.00 for what I did myself for about $250.00. I know, because I had it done to my 2000 TL.

I would be glad to send anyone interested some pics if you supply an e-mail address. Better yet if I could figure out how to post pics to the site……

In fact I can still get to my spare tire with no problem. Any professional audio shop would charge around $1000.00 for what I did myself for about $250.00. I wanted to modify my system so I could put in the hot pioneer avic-x1.
That thing is nav and so much more. I will wait till they have a kit for the 04 tl though. No voice to mess up on my car I dont have navi and I dont care about the phone.
