Guys, please quell my nerves about my recent purchase in this thread!

Hey everybody,

Long story short is this: I am 25 years old and have been saving for an Acura for 11 years. It started off as an Integra when I was 14, then transitioned into an RSX, followed by a TSX, and now a 3rd gen TL. I've never pulled the trigger on any of these purchases until now; the 2006 6-speed 3G TL.

It has about 60k miles on it and during the test drive I didn't notice anything funny with the way it shifted, but I can't help but wonder why it's had two owners for such a new car. I'm hoping I don't run into that 3rd gear issue.

Please make me feel better about my purchase! I searched for months to find a 6-speed TL and found one at Carmax. I bought the warranty knowing about the tranny issue.

Drive the car for a couple of weeks and you'll realize there's nothing to worry about. Your car has very low mileage for its age.

dont worry about it. I have an older car with slightly mroe miles than you and it's perfectly fine. Small little things like brake light switch and what not that are extremely minor. It has yet to leave me stranded or failed to start *knock on wood*.

3rd gear issue while I've never experienced it, is resolved with GM FM fluid. I'm the third owner of my car, if that helps.

This is my first "new car."

Everything else I've owned has been older than 1990, so I'm excited to finally be realizing a dream.

If anything, change your transmission fluid to maintain the life of your transmission.

Relax and enjoy your "new car." Don't drive yourself nuts worrying about stuff that hasn't happened yet. Besides you said you bought the warranty - not sure what you bought but it should "buy" you some peace of mind.

CarMax is a great company to buy from. My TL was purchased there and the extended warranty just expired this May. It's not abnormal for your car to have two previous owners, granted it is six years old. The low 60k miles is a huge plus, and paired with the 6 speed, you should be golden.

My son just bought an 07 TL-s with 57K miles. He's the 4th owner. We wondered about why that was. The car did need a few things repaired, which the deal took care of. All of which was cosmetic. The battery did die though, but was probably the original or 2nd battery. Very minor. He's had the car for two weeks now and simply loves it. Acuras and Honda's are pretty solid and if you just maintain them, should last for many many, did I say many? miles.........

the 3rd gear issue is resolved by changing tranny fluid to a syncromesh modified friction fluid.

Thank you everybody. I'm hoping by end of August to have some parts for it. The thread won't be updated often as I'm a college student once again, but the first plans involve wider wheels, a lower stance, aspec kit, and new lights.

Agree with everyone.
Change tranny fluid to friction modified syncromesh. Use GM and stay away from Pennzoil.

Enjoy it and stay up on maintenance.

the only thing that worries me in this thread is this post.

in this economy, be smart. get education, then splurge on 'upgrades'

and this comes as a reply after ready that you been 'saving' all these years and you've had really old cars.

goodluck and don't be so panicky

I don't necessarily think 2 previous owners is alot on an 06. I am one of those ppl who love a car, then get tired of it after a yr or 2 and trade it in before something goes wrong. Always bought used cars, never had an issue knock on wood. If there is still any doubt in ur mind just take it to carmax & have them check it out since u have the warranty anyway. The first 30 days they fix anything and everything for free and after the 30 days u might have to pay a small deductible but depending on what tier u purchased the $ might be worth the piece of mind- which its prob nothing anyway but sometimes having someone test it in person can give u just the reassurance u need to be able to stop worrying & fully enjoy ur new car!

I am sure that 3rd gear seem like a major issue but in reality just a few member in this forum actually encounter the problem.

haha i dont think two owners with 60k is strange or uncommon at all. i personally have never owned a car more than 3 years. im *planning* on finding my dream tl and trying to hold onto it for awhile but in the last 13 months i have bought a cbr600rr for stunting, sold a wrx, bought a tundra, sold the cbr, bought a racebike zx6rr, bought an integra, bought an R1, sold an sv1000s, and am now selling the integra. i never know what ill learn about what i want and need in a car, its a wild ride! in the 9 years since i turned 16 ive owned 5 cars and 4 sportbikes. and im not like some "renter" every vehicle ive owned has been meticulously maintained and detailed so dont let multiple owners scare you!

That's kind of an understatement, quite a few 6MT Honda owners have had it. Out of the smaller group of 6MT owners a good amount have experienced the 3rd gear issue. And its not just limited to the 3.2/3.5L 6MT TL's, other Honda's like Civic & RSX have it too. In the grand scheme, its really a minor or non-issue since a simple fluid swap cures 95% of the time. But the other 5% or so, that have taken it into the dealer and opened up the trans, a good amount have had additional problems with Reverse or other rough shifts.

A more mild or intermittent case of the 3rd gear pop-out / rough shift is really a non-issue since the GMSM fluid works wonders. I've put on 70K miles going into my 3rd fluid change now and never experienced the 3rd gear issue after the GMSM.
