Got owned by an older M3

so i was hanging with my buddies in the car club when the new guy in a 96 or so M3 pulls up. we start talking and the topic of racing comes up. He said he has a Dinan intake and exhaust on it, and had planned for a new intake manifold. so we drove out to the country and made three runs..
1. we raced from a roll of about 35 and i got owned by about two lenghts
2. he have me a length from a roll of 40 and i was ahead until i hit our dreaded 4th gear
3. we raced from a dig and were pretty even up to 50 and then all i saw was tail-lights.

I couldnt believe how quick those older M3s are. we just wanted to see how our cars stacked up against each other and it was closer than most expected but damn..anybody know the output of the E36 M3?

E36 M3 would eat a TL after 80mph, before that it might be even. I'm pretty sure there were two variations, the older one with 240hp and the newer one (just before the E46 launch) with 280hp.

No US spec e36 M3 was ever rated at anything other than 240hp, although for '96 they bumped displacement from 3.0-3.2 and torque jumped from 225-236ft lbs. The 5spd coupes were low/mid 14 second cars. I wouldn't quake in my boots if one pulled up next to me.

yeah, his was a 3.2 so he had the bigger engine, i guess power to weight and a manual tranny factored into his advantage

sorry my bad, the US model was different, rated only at 240hp, while the Euro version was first rated at 286hp, then later got upgraded to 321hp.

we just ran them again last night since some of you guys said you kept up...we raced from a roll of 45, and he still owned me, just not as bad lol. if he is Dinan tuned, he should be putting out A LOT MORE than just 240hp

Not really, considering it's Dinan tuned. Adding headers, intake manifold (on 3.2s), and cams can really wake the car up. Better off going FI with these engines (more power for the money), or euro swapping like I did.

US s50 make 240 hp stock
Euro s50b30 make 286
Euro s50b32 make 320

Wow, the 02-03 TL-S can barely keep up with an E36 M3! How much do they get at the wheels from that 240crank? Well, I guess we don't have SSM too.

I think the newer E46's are like 255whp.

yeah, if he was in a newer one i wouldve backed out. 333 at the crank. but its kinda weird, like i said, i did a lot better on the launch than from a roll. i just turned my vsa off, left it in D5 and stomped it. ever the guy in the M3 was suprised how hard i launched

They aint that fast stock, they put down about 200-210rwhp, they can keep up with e46s with full bolt ons (around 240rwhp) and weight reduction. They are very, very, very fun to drive.

BMWs have amazing top end. They pull just as strong to 150 as they do to 60. If you play with a BMW, don't go over 100mph.

I raced an E36 M3 in my VR-4 when I was stock, trapping 101mph. I killed the M3 from 40-100 about 2-3 car lenghts. But as the speeds got higher I couldn't pull away but at one point I thought he was creeping back up.

While in my 02 Maxima a few years ago, I was gradually walked on twice by two different E36 M3s on two seperate occassions. Both times, the 3 pulled hard on me once they shifted into 3rd gear. That said, I have much respect for them.
