The good ole days re-visited

When I got out of the service and was driving a my 88 dodge Shadow, I did not hesitate to change the oil myself (or fix anything else). Then as I got older, started making more money and bought a car I had trouble changing the oil on (97 Mazda Protege) I just started taking the car to a mechanic for an oil change. I got the TL in 05 and up to now I have been taking it to the dealer for an oil change. Then I got laid off in Nov 09. Today was the first time I needed a oil change since then. So I bought the gear that I needed and climbed under the car and changed the oil.

DAMN it felt good.

I felt like a boob thinking about the time and money I spent going to garages getting this done. I'll be hard pressed to ever take my car in again (i hope I can get my buddy to show me how to change brakes).

For the record, I used the Mobil 1 full synthetic oil/filter. The posters on this site convenced me that amsoil/redline was better but no one close to me sells it. Pep Boys had Royal Purple but no RP filters.

Very nice Can't necessarily go wrong with Mobil 1 synth; it's what I use! And a brake job is easy as apple pie, get your friend to show you how to do it on one side and I guarantee you can do it on the other. Sorry to hear you got laid off G'luck to finding another job!

You don't need no stinkin' friend to show you how

If you are even slightly mechanically inclined, just follow one of the excellent brake DIYs (complete with pictures and service manual scans) in the 3G Garage. Piece of cake.

Tire rotation and AC filter change. I may have to go out and buy a decent jack and two more jack stands. Not sure if the OEM jack can handle constant use.

Advice/comments????
