Gas Tank Problem...
Couple of days ago, I was getting ready to pump gas when I noticed that the little cover on the gas tank that moves in when u insert the nozzle, was gone. I'm pretty sure I knocked it in one time while inserting the nozzle. My question is, should I worry about it? I wouldn't think it would damage anything, but I'm not sure.

It's not going to evaporate any faster than it would if the flap were there. You've still got a gas cap right?
The little flap is to minimize the amount of gas vapor that leaks out while you're at the gas station. No big deal. And no, it won't break anything sitting on the bottom of your gas tank.

Don't feed the...WTF?
Funny that you mention it - because I just noticed mine was gone for the first time last week. Not sure how long it's been gone, but it used to be there.
I'm debating on taking it to the dealer and making them fish the piece out of my tank. It may not hurt anything, but it's not supposed to be there anyways.
Plus - why else did I get a warranty?
(The dealer will probably tell me that my CAI is to blame for creating such a need for extra fuel that it ripped the flap off)

OK.. I'm confused. I guess I'm not sure what plastic piece you guys are talking about. Without me taking a picture (which I will do later) - When you take the gas cap off - there is the metal filler tube. In the center of the filler tube - there are 2 holes. The top one is about the size of a pencil eraser. This is for fumes and to release pressure (I think). The other hole at the bottom is the one that you put the nozzle into to fill your car.
This bottom fill hole is supposed to have a metal flap (almost looks aluminum? guessing it would have to be non corrosive). The flap looks like it is somehow installed from the underside of the "filler tube" end. Because the flap is larger than the hole - and gets pushed down into the filler tube when you insert nozzle. When you remove the nozzle - it is spring loaded and hinges back to cover the hole. I'm sure this is to keep dust and birdshit / sticks and stuff out of your gastank when you do not actually have the gascap on.
Am I making all this up, or do our cars not have that flap in the first place?

I really don't want it floating around in there, but if it will cause no damage, I really won't mind. I guess as long as my gas cap is good, huh?
Right - I got where you're coming from Houston. I'm in the same boat trying to find out what happened.
Other's on here are talking about a plastic piece "that could not possibly have fallen in". I have no idea what they are talking about. Do they think I'm trying to say my gascap fell into the hole? Are they talking about the gas cap dangly-thing? They are confusing me.
Plus a couple of people have said they don't have theirs either. Could this perhaps be something that we don't even have, and I just now picked up on it 2 years later? I didn't think so - although I do drive a winter beater and just started to drive the TL again.
One way or another - Imma figure this out

See? Told you there was no flap. I even digged to find where the spring can be, but I doubt there is any. Maybe the older generation have it...Anyone else seen this flap? No confirmation of this flap yet...

Damn.. I wen through all that trouble to type up an informational speach about my little flap just to get
Myabe that will be my next mod...lol I'll transplant the flap from my 91 blazer to the TL. I'll get it all polished up so I have a really shiny flap covering my hole.
(I wonder why we don't have it - or why they have been using it for the last 20+ years?)
