While Orlando might not have the highest gas prices around (filled up today for $3.09) good luck trying to find it !!!!!!!!!!!

Over 75% of our gas stations in the orlando metro area are SOLD OUT !!! due to hurricane Katrina and other factors....

Finally found gas after visiting 7 gas stations. I had to wait about 30 minutes and was only able to get 87 octane !!!!!

And they say it may only get worse

 

Gas is as expensive now as my auto insurance was when I was in college.

They say they have to let the gas price be whatever it should be so the supply does not run out, which means it could continue to rise. I say ration it at 2.50 a gallon and then if you need more charge 5 bucks for each extra gallon. The extra money going into a relief fund. There is no simple way out of this mess...

gas in mass is 3.30 to 3.50 for premium but that was yesterday. I expect another 10 cents today..

Check out the eXXon gas station in front of Lincoln Tunnel... I paid $2.99 for Supreme... last night..

and rest area in GSP are usually lower than local gas stations as well...

 

When I left for work yeaterday morning it was $2.65 a gal for regular, when I got home from work about 6 hours later it was $2.78 a gal.

Where I live in MD, I have seen premium as cheap as $2.99 all the way up to $3.79 a gallon. This was as of yesterday 9/1/05.

 

It's more than $3.50 here on long island and i have seen parts of the island that it's almost $4.00....

However... I just picked my car up from the dealership (had an oil change and fixed a burned out bulb in the heated seat button) and the SERVICE MANAGER said that we can put 87 octane in the car. "it will NOT harm the engine, but we may experience lower MPG...."

my car is leased... and i'm just about halfway thru... maybe i'll risk it and take a chance on the 87 octane if the gas prices dont start getting better soon!

 

Finally found some gas last night so my wife can have her Pilot back. I went to a Shell station and they had a $10.00 limit at 3.79 a gallon for Premium. I went to the BP at Windward Parkway and filled with 93 for 3.39 a gallon. I was down to fumes when I finally filled up.

 

I was at a Union 76 last night. The price for premium was $3.09. As I was filling up, a station employee was up on a ladder changing the billboard price for premium to $3.19.

 

Wednesday night I found $4.05 for Super while passing through Freeport. Across the street it was $3.79 with about 50 cars waiting on Merrick Rd to get in.

If you are going to go lower on the octane, I wouldn't go lower than 89. I think the MPG will be close to the same, but the engine won't put out as much power. If your MPG goes down a little, it might not be cost effective anyway, having to fill up more often, and generally spending the same amount of $$ over time.

I really hope gas goes up to $10/gallon. Maybe we will finally open our fucking eyes to what is, and has been going on for years.

 

The biggest problem I saw was not people topping off tanks it was people buying gas cans and filling them up so they would have it in the case of a gas shortage. This just makes it worse... I have a 2.5 gallon tank for my lawn mower/snow thrower and I was watching someone fill 3, 2.5 gallon gas tanks and putting them in their trunk.

That is causing more shortages and is dangerous if they got hit and that gas ignited. Back in the 70s people did that they were traveling around with 2 gallons in their trunks... That's like having a couple of sticks of dynamite in the trunk...

 

Just paid $3.09 for 89 octane (midgrade around here).
It takes a natural disaster for Bay Area, California not to have the most expensive gas prices in the country

The gas were purchased months ago, so basically the gas stations are making a killing out of this.

 

Not to mention the profit in tax revenues the various levels of government are

collecting on these hyper inflated prices....

Actually, gasoline taxes are per gallon (18.4 cents per gallon for the federal excise tax, state taxes vary but average slightly higher), so they're not making more money in tax revenue as prices go up. In fact, as prices continue to rise, consumption should fall, so they'll actually end up making less overall.

Yes, but gas has hit or exceeded $6 per gallon in some areas in the US, so it is comparable or even more than Canada and Europe.

Oh, and don't forget we have to pay our own health insurance and our houses are more expensive!

 

Our governer just said that he will waive the state tax on fuel purchases through the end of Septemer. THis should lower our prices by about 15 cents, not much, but every little bit helps.

 

In Queens...its about 3.49. But I found a place that sells it for 3.10 for premium. And it sucks because the TL is my daily driver. arghzzzzzzzzz

 

But won't it be up to the honesty of the fuel station owners to delete the tax from the numbers? If they chose not to, it would just be additional profit for them - and that would NOT surprise me.

I started driving like grandma today keeping rev below 2500RPM in town.
I kept rev below 2000RPM in stop and go traffic and I still get 20MPG at best. What a sucky idling gas wasting job.

Tips to TL owners : AVOID Traffic at all cost! even you have to drive extra 5 miles probably eats less gas than sitting in traffic for 10 minutes.

A year from now oil will be selling for $35-$40/barrel, and prices will drop. No one will be fretting that "Big Oil", which is actually owned by stockholders like you and me, will not be making the profits they are today.

All the conspiracy, robber barron stuff strikes me as generally naive - all commodities are subject to supply driving price: lobsters, gold, oil, beer (hey - beer is less costly than water - we have benefitted from that price war). When the commodity was bought, and at what price, has nothing to do with any mfr's right to charge what it can get, assuming there is not collusion violating existing law. Our system works - we have seen time and time again that it does. And we have seen time and time again that when Congress intercedes, it makes matters worse. Price controls do not work.

Let the free market do what it does best, and keep Big Govt out of it. The best thing IMO that govt can do is reduce or eliminate the red tape that restricts the production of sensible business cases encouraging domestic oil discovery, extract, transport, and refining. Open ANWAR and offshore drilling. Start building nuclear plants - the French have old style plants that produce, what - 90% of their electricity?

I will have T-shirts printed that say "If the French can do it, why not us?"

 

Gas prices in the Upstate of SC for regular range from $3.09 to $3.30 - I payed $3.69 for Premium yesterday - now only regular is available at most gas stations. Crazy....prices will go back down in a few weeks, as soon as things start to get back to normal.

I saw on TV that one gas station in Atlanta was charging $6 per gallon. I am sure a lot of gas stations are gouging the helpless public. Shame on them

 

Well in Atlanta, there is a State of Emergency put in place Thursday that allows residents to report gas stations that are believed to be price gouging. And the fines are pretty stiff - $5000 and up for each infraction.

 

You really think that oil will go down signifcantly? You really think that in 6 months or a year or whatever all the oil companies are going to saw well we fixed all our refineries built a few new ones. All that is paid for. So why don't we lower the gas / oil prices by a buck a gallon?

It not just Katrina that is driving up the prices. We import 60% of what we use. Katrina was just an excuse for the oil companies to move the price up sooner rather then later.

Easy for those of us that can afford a TL to say let the free market set the price. If it gets to $5 a gallon maybe some us will have to sell our TLs and get something better on gas but, chances are we will not be walking or freezing this winter. At some point oil might go up enough to affect even the upper middle class and rich. Maybe not.

This isn't cable TV or high speed internet. Most people need to drive to work and heat their houses. Infrastruct and highways and things like that ARE the busy of the federal government. Ok oil isn't infrustructure exactly but, without it much of the instructure is useless.

Where did president Bush make all his money? We need someone in government to step up and figure out how to lessen our need for Oil. Alternative fuels. The market at some point might get around to it but, might need to be pushed in the right direction.

 

In the past week I drove by the same set of gas stations every day. On Tuesday the price for super was $2.89, Wednesday $3.19, Thursday $3.29 and Friday $3.49. This was in CT, but I live in NY. Around me I saw the highest price yet, $3.99. My wife has a Pathfinder, due to really crappy MPG with the Pathfinder we use the TL all the time. It is what it is, just sucks, but it really isn't that big of a deal, we still drive an awesome vehicle.

 

I filled up for 1.61CDN / litre this morning, cost me 96$ in my 20gallon G35 tank

Calcs: 20gallon's x 3.8 = 76litre's x 1.61$ = $122CDN full tank

Most futures price trading doesnt physically hit the market for four months.

 

Mark my words since you're so scared. Long term, oil prices a barrel will end up around $40.

Premium vs.regular has nothing to do with "clean" vs. "dirty." Octane refers to the fuels resistance to igniting. You've made a practical decision that should only cost you a bit of performance.
