Gas Mileage Real Observations
I just did a road trip around Florida with my TL. I did some experimenting with gas mileage with the help of the trip computer. I topped off all the tires to 34 psi warm.
32 MPGwhile traveling on flat highway at steady 70MPH/2000 RPM in 5th gear with a 5AT with Navi and A/C running. Outside temp 86 degrees. This was an average over a 10 mile run.
I then turned the A/C OFF without changing anything else. Windows remained closed. Another 10 mile run
33 MPG
I then ran 20 miles at 80MPH (approx 2400 RPM) with the A/C on and averaged
28 MPG.
All of these numbers were on dead flat roads because that's all we have in Florida.

my numbers stay consistent with the A/C on or Off, though the fan keeps on running ( I Push the A/C Button). And I get about 1 extra according to the MID and the navi because I have my tires at 35 PSI Cold.

got to set the tires COLD!!
You were likely underinflated by a few psi, the tires can gain 4+ psi hot - thats why they are set cold pressure- which allows for internal heat and air pressure expansion.
More than 1 mile slowly to the gas station,, is enough to take them out of cold reading
Try 36-front 32 or 34 rear cold-- works well to reduce understeer and improve mileage

on this 08 TL I am driving I am averaging 28mpg. This is with 11 miles of sides streets followed by 16 miles of freeway on the way to work and 27 miles of side streets on the way home..total distance travelled 145 miles over 2.5 trips to work with avreage speed of 38mph. My CL type S would average 25mpg over the same route but I think the difference was due to messed up transmission that is now in the process of getting replaced

With 35psi all round (cold). temperature on auto always.
All city driving, lights, start and stop I get 19-20 mpg.
On a trip up to MASS or to Bufallo NY I'll get 32mpg with 4 people in the car and trunk filled with luggage.
Going to RI (much flatter) same situation (4 people, luggage) I actually got 35 mpg. I was amazed thought the computer was incorrect, so I checked it the old way, got the same results.
I will say that tire inflation makes a HUGE difference. In city same trip to work that I normally get 19-20 mpg, with my tires inflated to 31 psi, I get 17 mpg.
I'm not bs'ing this is what I get, tank after tank. Oh and I always run 93 octane in it.

Drifting
My best gas mileage was 31.3 MPG on a run from LA to Gustine for 238 miles. MID speed was 70mph and there were a few runs at 80+ mph. I think that is excellant mileage for a fully car loaded with my family and luggage. The road was I-5 with sometimes hilly portions like the grapevine.
I have never seen mileage like that since the car is mostly driven in the city. Again MID speed predicts mileage pretty accurately. If MID speed < 25, I never get better than 19MPG. If MID speed is > 30MPH , I'll get 21MPG.
The last 4 tanks have proven (again to me anyway) that the MID's calculated MPG is dead on for my driving profile. The average error on these tanks was < .25MPG which is amazing since it displays as an integer. I use www.fueleconomy.gov to track this stuff. Looks like there is one car in Florida that is averaging 31MPG so having flat/open roads certainly helps things.

Burning Brakes
I once averaged 40 mpg going 50 mph (about an hour long trip, on a road where the speed limit was 45). That appears to be the TL's most efficient speed (for the 5AT at least).

I reset my MID every time I get the oil changed to check my mileage. It is always 21-22 mpg over 6,000mi of daily commuting. (The average speed is only 27mph!!! Hate NY traffic)
I do get almost 30mpg on my long trips but this is offset by a lot of sitting in traffic.

I dont believe in the MID, I feel as though its bloated in its numbers!! After I fill up I check how many miles I traveled and then do the math to get my figures. I get 27-29mpg and thats rolling on 20s, with 80/20 mix of driving (80 highway). So I am happy enough

TL Nub
When I travel to Florida from Atlanta, I get about 31 mpg with the A/C on. When I am commuting to work in Atlanta, I am getting anywhere between 22-24 mpg. I have an 05 TL AT SSM.
