I'm getting 18-22 in L.A. slow n' go, and over 30 on the highway, 75-85. I'm satisfied. C'Mon - it's 270 REAL horsepower! A 70's muscle car with 270 REAL horsepower (most 70's horsepower ratings were highly inflated) would be giving you 7-12 mpg.
Alright I checked tire preasure. The car has been sitting in my garage for hours, so the tires must be cold. These were the results:

Driver side/front = 31 PSI
Driver side/Rear = 31 PSI
Passenger Side/Front = 34 PSI
Passenger Side/Rear = 32 PSI

I will adjust them, but does everybody think these settings could have caused poor gas mileage??

As a rule of thumb I used to set my tires to 35 PSI all around.

I know the manual probably says 32PSI like my old TL, but that was just too low I thought.

Any thoughts???

Big Ped,

My 5AT is now at over 800 miles. I'm continuing to get 24-25 mpg in L.A. traffic. I commute 30 miles each way, mostly congested freeway but some city streets at each end. There is the occasional "spirited" use of acceleration (even Mother Teresa couldn't resist I bet) but mostly straightforward and forward-looking driving. The speeds do creep up there to supralegal levels when the lanes clear out--we're talking 70-80 mph.

I use Chevron Supreme (91 octane) exclusively. Maybe try that? I guess I should check my tire pressure and report back, huh?

Any help would be appreciated. Thanks a lot for your relevant input. I guess you do take advantage of some highway miles. Even in congested traffic, I suppose you are moving for the most part and advancing. However, I don't think I've ever gotten that mileage with my old TL, and I was doing a bit of traveling to clients in Commerse, Northridge, Pasadena, etc before I turned it in. Thanks VOdoc.

33 MPG on Highway with my 2004 WDP TL

I just finished a round trip from Tulsa to Dallas and back down Highway 75, 250 miles each way. My 2004 WDP 5AT w/ Navi had 400 miles on it before starting the trip to Dallas. I reset the Trip Computer before each of the trips. I achieved 29 MPG from Tulsa to Dallas, and got...33 MPG from Dallas back to Tulsa. And this is on a 4 lane (2 each way) divided highway with lots of curves, hills, and speed zones for small towns. I did not use cruise control, and I varied my speed from 65 to 75 mph (breaking in since under 1,000 miles). Around town I am averaging 23 MPG.

That is fantastic. I am happy for you. I just filled up my tank for the third time ver. On the first I got 15, and 14mpg on the second. I filled up with 91 octane Exon gas this time. I really hope it gets better this time otherwise I will go nuts. I have my fingers crossed.

Still averaging sixteen but bouncing off of 17 mpg. Been using Chevron. What could explain some cars getting 14, 15, 16 mpg around town and others averaging 19, 20, 21, or better?

GSD98,

Don't be too concerned about getting overly poor gas mileage numbers. I realized that I was only getting about 16 with city only driving in stop and go traffic. I finally got it back to about 18 with a little more highway miles. I do about 80-90% city with my 5AT TL. I usually average around 18-19. It's just the nature of the beast while in the city. Just try to anticipate the traffic conditions a little more and you should see some improvements.

I picked up my SSM/Ebony/6MT 6/12/04. I drove it about 60 miles back to Tampa from Orlando and avg 30 MPG @ about 60 MPH no cruise since the dealer said do not use the cruise until after 850 miles. Of course driving around town as I can not get enough of this car, I have put another 160 miles on her and averging 23mpg. I am still on my first tank of gas from the dealership. I am trying as hard as I can to drive conservativly however, have punched it 2-3 times. I usually shift about 4-5K RPM and downshifted a little more until the brakes were broken in. Hope this helps.

Poor milleage!

But damn the city mileage sucks "for me" and I can't figure it out. Since the last fill up (above), based on your responses, I've been driving really modest. Really, it is even uncomfortable and not fun at all. I hit the gas (not hard), get a little momentum, get off the gas peddal and just glide to the red sign or stop sign. When I accelerate again. I do it slowly. No change in mileage, I'm half the tank now and it reads 14mpg. And that is only because I took a few trips to Hollywood this weekend from West LA (15 miles each way with hardly any trafic). Before that it was reading 12 mpg. MY comute to my office is about 3.7 miles and I make that in about 10 to 15 minutes with traffic in the morning/afternoon via local streets. It does not appear to be like a traffic jam or anything, there are stops, but it is not that bad.
My TL behaves like this too. Good mileage on highway as 33 mpg, but bad mileage in city (in fact it is suburban) as 12 mpg. I have noticed that conditioned air affects mileage in city as much as 2-4 mpg.

By the way in Montreal (Canada), the gas cost as <cheap> as 3,70$/gallon (0,98$/Liter) for super gasoline... So I hope that my TL will improve its fuel comsumption as the previous lucky guys...

I went on my first semi-long trip since I got the 04 TL. I went to Costa Mesa from LA. The trip was a total of 49 miles each way. I averaged 29MPG at 64 MPH. And 28 MPG at 65 MPH on the way back. I was really going about 77MPH most of the time, but the readings also include street driving time when I got out of the freeway. So now that's it, Im stuck. I guess there is nothing wrong with the car. I will simply have to live with bad mileage in the city.
