Future Acura Owner (maybe) looking for advice...

Hi guys,

I do not get on here much because I do not own an Acura, but have wanted to for many years. I will be in the market soon and have been considering getting into a car since I do not need my current SUV. Due to my budget, I have been considering cars like the Honda Civic and Hyundai Elantra. Then I got to thinking for the same price as a new Civic/Elantra I could get a used TSX/TL and be in an Acura. I love the 3rd Gen TL's...every time I see one I still think it is a great looking car, and so are the 1st Gen TSX's, but I'm more fond of the TL. Most of my commuting is on the highway so fuel economy is not the biggest factor. I'm not the kind of person that trades cars frequently so whatever I buy will need to last me 6-8 years. My budget is limited because I don't want to finance so if I can't find a TL that meets my criteria I'm sure I can get in a TSX.

My question is would it be better to buy a 07/08 TL or 07/08 TSX with low miles (50K or less)? Reliability is most important to me as well as how easy the car is to live with for 6-8 years.

This is the type of car I would be interested in:

They are both reliable cars. I of course like the TL over the TSX, that is why I chose the TL. I have to say my TL gets 19-21MPG on the highway so its not really fuel efficient. I drive 100 miles per week and fill up once a week. I am not a aggressive driver either but I am not sure why the MPG is so poor on the 3G TL.

The TL and TSX are both reliable cars so you should not have many problems in that area.

Now its up to you. Do you need the extra space the 3G TL has? Do you need the extra power the TL has? In NY you can find a 3G TL 07-08 for around your price range but with significantly less miles. If your willing to travel I am sure you can find many great deals.

one thing I noticed when shopping was that the TSX's were not that much if at all cheaper for what I was looking for. I am thinking mainly because of the gas mileage and the 4cyl of the TSX. That said, I have 26mpg during my first 3 fill-ups. That is about 70 highway, 30 city, so I am content.

I wanted the extra room of the TL, and the fact that I only searched for MT may have had a factor on price too.

Reliability? They are Honda's, nough said!

I have an 06TL and it's been as reliable as taxes. If you want to spend a little less, you can opt for an 06 TL with Navi and that would save you a few grand as well.

I've own both a 04 TSX and 08 TL-S and both are very reliable and have enjoyed both. The TSX actually has slightly more trunk space but the TL has more cabin space. I like the extra power of the TL but the TSX is very peppy. I do prefer the styling of the TL over the TSX, even though the TSX looks good too. With the TL-S I was getting 30+ MPG on the highway.

Very great post retarded!
except, highway fuel economy can be as great as 34mpg.
either you're doing both city and highway and getting a combined mpg, or you're idling longer than you should.

You have to evaluate, rank, and assign values to things with cars that are important to you. Do you want a V6? More cabin space? Premium surround sound stereo? Looks? Memory seating?

That said, when I was younger, I wanted the TL, but simply could not justify the price difference between it and the Accord for 95% of the same features. I bought the Accord and invested the difference.

My car with LoveMyTLS's old car:

Thank you.

So, back on topic, Carver, have you considered an 06-07 Accord sedan, maybe one with a manual 6MT?

Yeah I used to have an Accord ('02)...and I've considered a used '08/'09 but they just don't don't look as good as the TSX/TL.

Does anyone know of the best dealer in the DFW area? MacChurchill Acura has several TL's in my price range and Vandergriff Acura has a TSX that I like. I live about 3 hours away from these dealers so it's hard to know.

I get about 19-21 in the city in my TLS 5AT and I have seen as high as 33 on the freeway but usually combined 50/50 I get around 24-26 which is not bad for a 3.5L

I was also deciding between the TSX and the TL. I chose the TL over the TSX mainly due to the power difference (I also personally think the TL looks a little better than the TSX). I wanted the ability to get 30+ mpg highway (did not mind if i had to go 65 to get it) with the power of a 6 cylinder car on demand. I didnt mind the increase in maintenance costs. Also, the 6MT is something of a rarity in the TL.

i've read the 6MT TSX can easily get mid to high 30s mpg at speeds at or above 70 (vs. the TL getting just above 30 doing the 65mph limit).

Maintenance will be less in the TSX, and you dont have to worry about changing a timing belt like you do in the TL.

The new Accords are boats.

I'm talking about the 06/07 Accords. They're much better looking.
