when i close the door of my front passenger door from outside, it has that nice clean thump. But whenever someone gets inside and closes it, the sound from inside is very harsh, it drives me nuts. what gives?

I know my little box on the door opens sometimes when people are getting in and will make a funky noise, which drives me nuts. I don't know if that is what you are talking about though

that must be it, because my rear doors close so nicely and the map pockets are built in

Try closing the front doors when the windows are open.

i know that sound, but its not like i keep the windows down when i leave the car anyway so it doesnt bother me

I see in your avatar that you have the windows down. So how did you manage to get out of your car without opening the door? Did you climb out?

A few of the Acura dealers I went to had all the windows down on all the models in the showroom except for the TL.
