Fix or leave as is before selling

Happy Thanksgiving everyone. Hope your day is going better than mine.

Long story short, I switched jobs and now have a 100mi commute everyday instead of my previous 5 miles. I got a beater car for the commute and decided to sell my 07 CBP Type S. I went to go get something out of the car tonight before heading to another Thanksgiving dinner and found this. The last time I drove the car was Sunday and it sits in my parking spot during the weekdays. Words cannot express how frustrated I am right now. My apartment complex doesn't have security cameras in the garage so I have no way of proving it was the person parking next to me. Though I expect it since I park in the middle row of cars and nobody would walk between by my car.

I've had a few people express interest in the car at my asking price, but now with this it will drop the price down. I will be getting an estimate ASAP on the cost of fixing it, but wanted to get everybody's opinion on whether to get it fixed or selling it with the scratches? The scratches are down to the metal so it will have to be repainted. Will the shop have to repaint more than the door to blend everything else in?

It's common practice to blend the surrounding panels. Find a good enough painter, and it shouldn't be a practical worry.

Do you have comprehensive insurance? If so, you can try and get a cheque for the depreciation because of this. If you succeed, just lower the price by whatever the number is. I think the process will take a while, though.

I have comprehensive coverage on the car. I will be talking to the insurance company tomorrow to see what my options are.

So many worthless douchebags out there. That's gotta be so frustrating. If I was in an apartment it would be very difficult to have a nice car knowing its gotta sit outside every night and have to constantly worry about stuff like that happening. At first I was gonna say why would you want to sit in a beater if your commute got longer as you would think you would want the nicer car since your going to be spending so much time in it, but it's hard to have nice things when other people will just ruin them.

Unless you think you might have an enemy, it is just a random act of doucebaggery, and probably wouldn't happen again. Get it fixed and keep the car as a weekend car (unless you really want to sell). I'd hate to have a beater as my primary car. Get a cover if it has to be outside in a parking lot.

It'd be cheaper to replace the door and not worry about a paint job matching wouldn't it?

How's that possible? It's not like door panels come pre-painted from the factory so you can't just call Acura and order a carbon bronze pearl door skin. I mean it does suck to have stuff repainted with the possibility that it won't match perfectly, but I don't think there is anyway to repair it other than have that door repainted and possibly blended into other panels. I'm no body repair guy, but carbon bronze pearl looks like it could be a difficult color to match And even if it does match in certain lighting conditions, it may not in direct sunlight, or in shade or whatever. IMO repainted panels never match perfectly.

Try going to a scrap yard and find a parts car with the same colour. Will save you the worry about it blending in with the repaint.

Man that sucks!

You will still have to pay the deductible with your comp coverage.

You can't get a new door prepainted, but you might find one in a junkyard...very slim chance tho.

The new car is an '08 Honda Civic EX, so still driveable but not as comfy as the TL . Part of the reason for selling the TL is to get out of the apartment life so I won't have to deal with this anymore. With the job change, I'm committed to staying in the area so the sale of the TL will go towards a home purchase.

I'll be getting the repainting estimates next week, but looks like I will be out $500 for my deductible. Still not sure how/why this happened. I live out towards the edge of town in a really nice neighborhood and most of my neighbors are like me, mid to late 20s that make enough to afford living in this complex.

it's likely a random attack by the (politically correct term) 'disenfranchised youth', otherwise known as douchebags!

Good luck on the repair...I wouldn't try to sell it as is. I'd be pretty steamed if this happened to my car as well, and I'm sorry it happened to yours.

It pisses me off just seeing the pic knowing that someone probably did that and just walked away without a care. As some others have said, I might try junkyards with the off chance that you can find another door. CBP is pretty difficult to match, but if your going to sell I might not worry too much about it. Good luck with everything.

oh man, really sorry to see that.

few years ago when i had an 03 accord some punks who i'm sure felt that i 'stole' their parking spot keyed my 2 front left and right fender and 4 doors. wasn't down to the metal, but close enough that it was still visible.... guess it faded a little over time and i grew to accept it but it hurt a little every time i saw it and i couldn't justify the $1500 to repaint 6 panels

...sorry man
