i would think the main relay and fuses took the brunt of the damage.

Check for continuity, even tho it may seem to be good it could really be shot.

The loud pop was made at the connection of the battery cables and not the fuses. Fuses only protect if the current is flowing in the right direction. You guys need to "Think outside the fuse box" (in reverse).

By hooking up the battery cable backwards your girl just turn all the control units into fuses. Depending on which circuit was activated, the corresponding control unit, solenoid, motor, etc, would most likely be fry or burnt out.

The fuses would be the last weakest point in the circuit therefore least likely to pop.

- Fuses protect from over-current situation. It's just piece of metal that doesn't care about direction of current. (it doesn't matter which side you put them in) But it's good place to start as reversed polarity might cause over-current situation.
Relays and DC motors shouldn't be damaged by applying reverse polarity. They might work just fine while doing so (or work in reverse depending on motor type) (unless they are brush-less motors with electronic controller)

- Big question: is car behaves normally? If you turn key, dash lights up, gas gauge goes up, display works, radio and ac fans works, remote unlocks/locks door, windows work, etc ?

I've been close to car jumped the wrong way. Alternator needed to be replaced, but everything else worked fine. But then - it was old car, and it was long time ago, so I might not remember it correctly.

If the worst comes to the worst, all electronic boards might get damaged. Or at least all that are activated at this time (separated by relay will be fine).
