Question DVD Player for Non-Nav TL

Hello everyone. I'm new to the forum and this is my first post. I picked up a brand new 2004 TL yesterday. I got one without navigation because I wanted to put an aftermarket DVD player in there. Driving the car home yesterday, I realized how integrated the controls were from the steering wheel, stock CD/radio, and temperature control to the display panel that sits where the navigation would sit. Seems like it would be difficult to retain all of that integration with something aftermarket and it also seems like I may have to replace the stock CD/radio as well if I wanted to put a DVD player in there. Has anyone done this, thought of this, or have any suggestions?

Thanks in advance.

no one has done it so far. personally i think the cost that you would have to spend is more than the difference between the nav and non-nav version. if you install a headunit with lcd and dvd player it will run you 1500 for a decent one. then there is the cost of installation and custom brackets and mounts to make it look factory when installed. you would have to use one of the flip up spots in the center console which is pretty low and you would be staring pretty much at the bottom of the center console. this could be dangerous because you take your eyes really far away from the road. if you decide to install in higher you would have to have complete custom work to get a headunit in there to replace those 2 led display lines. don't mean to flame but if you wanted an lcd screen in the car it is well worth it to get the nav version.

I guess maybe I wasn't completely clear. I didn't want the navigation, but I did want to be able to play actual DVD movies. Correct me if I'm wrong, but the navigation that comes with the NAVI TLs cannot play DVD movies, can it?

Correct, as is it cannot, but that doesn't mean you can't mate one into the current system, with the right amount of money almost anything can be done.

There is a guy on here who managed to use his Navi screen for playing DVD's, I think it would be easier with a Navi car than the non-Navi. But that's too late for you now unless you return the car.

500 Dollars. Make your Navi play DVD. Should have consulted this forum before you bought your car. There was a thread indicating this. But dont lose all hope, you can get another DVD hooked up.
